Any current phones PTT upgradeable?

Hello,

I was just curious if anyone knows or thinks that any current Sprint
phones could be upgraded to PTT compatibility with a firmware update?
My 4900 (now discontinued) seems like it was almost built for PTT, with
the large "voice memo" button on the side. Or will Sprint have to
release all new PTT phones, leaving other users who wish to have the PTT
option out of the loop?

Anyone have any thoughts or opinions?

I believe new phones are required, as PTT uses different technology and
chips.

Yup, it's a hardware issue as well as software.

I'll point out that Sprint doesn't make $$$ on the phones; it makes
money on the service. In fact, what you pay for your PCS phone is less
than what it costs Sprint.

If the software upgrade is made available for it, sure. I have the 4900
and I'd like to see the PTT work on it but only Sanyo and/Sprint PCS
know if the software is going to be available or not.

The majority of the posts that I am seeing these days say that it would
be more lucrative for Sprint to not make phonesthat are PTT upgradable
as this causes subscribers to purchase new phones. I think this is
insane. From my point of view it seems just the opposite. I would be
much more willing to try PTT if the phone could just take a software
upgrade and be useable. The only money that I see involved with this
would be for the testing of this software compatibility and the price
the manufacturer would charge to develop it. There has been talk that
the 8100 might be compliant by turning one of the softkey buttons into
a PTT button. This makes sense to me, sure you wouldn't have a speaker
phone but that isn't what PTT is about. You would just have the
convenience of a quick connect to a group or individual but would have
to use the phone as a traditional handset. I see no problem here and
ask what would that hurt? Sure if you need the speakerphone, you would
have to upgrade, but this seems like a low cost way for Sprint to roll
the PTT out extensively with little out of pocket expense. For each
handset they produce there exists the same testing issues, but also the
cost of production. This seems to me that the cost would be less as
most of the testing is done and the production cost has already been
paid for. Someone explain to me where it becomes more lucrative for
Sprint to require you to purchase a new phone, please? I see that alot
more may be willing to try it if they could implement it on their
current phone. I for one don't need a speaker phone and would be more
than happy to use my current handset for direct connect and just use it
like I would for a normal call. I know that I will not be upgradig to
PTT when it comes out as I have just bought 3 new phones and can't see
just getting rid of them so that I may try PTT. They have esssentially
lost me as a PTT customer as I think many would agree who have
recently purchased new phones at a great expense. I just think it
would be more cot effective to look into a software upgrade that allows
PTT, but may not allow all of thr functionality (ie the speakerphone
two-way). Right now Nextel allows the call to go private with dirct
connect and be used like a normal handset (yes I know it would not be
duplex, and only simplex, but would allow for the group conference). I
think this just seems more cost effective as Sprint would reap the
benefits of the subscriber airtimes rates(and let's face it, THAT is
where they make their money and not on the handset sales)...

PTT probably has additional hardware and firmware involved that makes it
difficult to just flash a phone and make it PTT capable. Remember, this
technology wasn't ready when the 4900 and other phones came out, and I
think I had heard rumos that it had to be scrapped and redone once or
twice, so it's hard to just build that sort of capability in to phones
and and just turn it on at a future date.

Short asnwer: yes, you'll most likely need a new phone.

Before you get too down, keep in mind that there are rumblings that
Nextel will have to switch to CDMA if it plans on doing further upgrades
to its network. That means everyone with a Nextel phone now will
eventually have to ditch their handsets for new models, too.

Isaiah, that link is a bit dusty ... i.e.: 27 months old, which is forever

The 4900 does for PTT, in fact sprint did network testing with the 4900
with a test software load. This will NOT be available to customers because
there were some bugs that were adressed with the new PTT phones.

Older phones could do ReadyLink, but the phones took four seconds to
send to play a message, and took about 10 seconds to start a PTT
session. The new phones are much faster at this.

It will still do just the voice memo. The RL2500/7200 will probably do
PTT with that button though.
