sending "one way" text message from phone?

Is there any way to send a one-way text message from the phone (specifically
a N400) without using the "web" interface? I just want to send a message
without having to wait for the connection, going to shortmail, etc. This is
the screwiest thing sprint has come up with so far. My old sprint phone
didn't have to log into a website to send text messages. "Notifications"
use the same signaling as everybody elses "text messages".
If anyone can shed some light on this subject or better yet, have a
solution, I would appreciate it.

You need SendNote. Do a search for it and you'll find out where to
download it.

So when is SendNote going to support other carriers? Why not just use the
POST method on Sprintusers.com, instead of messaging.sprintpcs.com?

If the author doesn't have time, I guess if I could get the source, I could
tinker with J2ME. So if the author is out there, send me the source code and
I will attempt to implement it.

I think you guys missed the point here. I am wanting to send FROM THE PHONE
not, to the phone. On older sprint phones and other providers phones a
person can choose a number or address and type then send a message WITHOUT
having to connect to the web first. The web interface souldn't have to be
used to send a simple text message from my phone.

But that is how SprintPCS implemented it, so what you might expect based
on using other providers phones does not apply to SprintPCS Network and
phones.

Yes for "other providers' phones", but I don't recall any SPCS phone =
with that capability.
Have I missed noticing that somehow?

Before sprint went to the "vision" thing, it just sent without doing all the
web stuff. It was much faster and cleaner.

No, we didn't miss the point. SendNote is a J2ME program that you
install on your phone and can use to send one-way text messages FROM
YOUR PHONE. Check out the link that Larry provided and you'll see all
about it.

It has nothing to do with the author's code. One-way text messages on
Sprint are Sprint-only. That is how the servers work, period. No
program can send a message if the backend doesn't support it. One-way
text messages were developed for Sprint to Sprint communication, so
that's all they can do. Until there is real SMS, you need Shortmail to
send messages to someone not on Sprint.

Sorry, I didn't read about the app enough and I did get it on my phone. My
fault for not reading enough.

I have to disagree about the messaging since I can send a message from a
T-Mobile account and if I send to "MY#"@messaging.sprintpcs.com it will show
up as a one-way message or as sprint likes to call it, a "notification"
which includes the entire message (up to 160 characters set by that standard
for the channel). This is what all other providers use for text messaging.
On the other hand, if I use the same T-mobile phone and account to send the
same message but JUST use my phone number, it shows up in short mail (where
I have to connect to the web and yadda, yadda, yadda). This is just silly.

You can send one from T-Mobile because the other big 5 carriers have
true MO-SMS. On their phones and because of network support, you can
send a message from one phone to another. No matter what kind of phone
you have, Sprint cannot support this because the network doesn't.
Period. SendNote works because it goes through a proxy which then
relays the message to a Sprint phone. But it's getting sent out
through the same Sprint system that does not allow these messages to go
to non-Sprint phones.

Sprint has two types of messaging: Shortmail and one-way text messages.
Because neither of them are SMS (which is what the other 5 carriers
use) they won't work exactly the same as SMS. It doesn't matter what
you send from a T-Mobile phone because you won't get the same exact
message in the same format (SMS) because it doesn't exist on Sprint.
Until they upgrade their network and offer SMS ready phones, you won't
be able to do this.

Really? With what phone was this? Shortmail and the one-way messaging as
it exists right now pre-dates Vision.

While not technically accurate, this gets all the practical points across.
SendNote, if I remember the author's original posts on this, basically just
accesses the exact same applet that we use on the SPCS web site to send the
one-way messages. And that applet only sends to SPCS numbers.

I, too, have simplified the workings, but between you and I, all the
important information is there.

Eh, close enough, I knew it was something like that. I guess I had
it explained to me incorrectly, but I knew the app somehow accesses the
system that's used to send the one-way text messages so you have the
same limitations that you do when sending from the website. Thanks for
the correction.
