Does anyone know when we will be allowed to keep our cell phone number
when switching carriers? I heard October or November but I'd like to
know for sure. I'm thinking of leaving SprintPCS for Nextel. A friend
did and he said he's never had a dropped call with Nextel (he had alot
of problems with SprintPCS.)

November 24 if you're not under contract and don't owe money on your
account. Otherwise it could be a $150 Early Termination Fee, and all the
$$ to zero out your account.

The issue with number portability is still in debate , but is allready
stirring up quite a bit of yap!..
Nextel and thier PTT service is excellent, on the other hand thier
cellular service has something less to be desired.. plus the iden
network is starting to show its age..
I would rethink this and wait for pcs to rollout the PTT in fall 2004

Depends on where he is located. In some areas Nextel customers are quite
happy with their cellular coverage, as Agent Blue said his friend was.
Over in alt.cellular.verizon; their PTT has gotten a mixed reception,
and I understand SprintPCS' soon to be released PTT uses similar
technology as Verizon.

If you're still under contract, you're liable for the $150 ETF anyhow,
even if you've paid off your balance.

Re: When can we keep numbers when switching carriers?
if you really are thinking about switching to nextel for sprint, then
let me tell you this. sprint and verizon are the only companies that
ive never encountered interference. i think that maybe because they are
the few that run on cdma. all other companies have interference and
nextel is one of the worst. take a nextel phone and put it near your tv
or car radio when your on a call. they all are horrible with that. ive
tried gsm networks and i hate them. ive had dropped calls because of
machines going off at work cause of the interference. ive never had
that problem with sprint

Thanks for all the replies. I really haven't had that much problem with
SprintPCS but my friend was swearing by Nextel. I think I'll keep
SprintPCS for awhile.

It's often best to stay with what you know.
Are you friends enough to use the Nextel phone for 24 hours one weekend
to test it out for your purposes? While in some areas, Nextel cellular
coverage is truly swiss cheese, maybe its just fine in your area,
apparently your friend thinks so?;
although sometimes people refuse to admit that a service they picked
could be less than perfect.

November 24 is supposed to be the mandated start date.
Also, which area are you in? You're probably in one f the few areas
where Nextel has decent coverage. I've tried them in the NYC area, and
in Texas, and had nothing but coverage and sound quality issues with
Nextel.
What is nice about Nextel is back when I had it, they had a system in
place to automatically credit your bill if a call dropped and you tried
to call the same number agian within one minute fo the call dropping.
Though it depends on how you look at it: really nice that they did that,
or really bad that they knew the network was so bad they had to put such
a system in place.

When Phillipe isn't fabricating what others say to him, he's quite
reasonable. This is a perfect example of that. He's right on.

All the carriers provide a 2 week trial period to try out the services. You
would be responsible for any phone activation fee and first month's plan fee
& taxes, if you decided not to go with that service.
Best thing to do is to check with your friends and business co-horts to see
which carrier they have, whether it fits their needs at work, home and
anywhere else you will be using the phone. You can also go some where there
a bunch of people with cell phones, maybe a local watering hole and ask
around as well.

Check with your friends and any colleagues with cell phones. A cell
company that is good in one area, may be dreadful in another.

Re: When can we keep numbers when switching carriers?
The FCC has given the release date of Nov 24/03, however all carriers
are against this change, so expect a delay.

Verizon has said they have accepted it and are ready to proceed.
