Looking for comments on anyone else considering the same transition... am I
    missing anything with my logic?

When I initially started using a cell phone about 5 years ago I signed up
with Sprint. It worked adequately, I didn't have any billing/customer
service nightmares or anything that I hear about today. Then I moved onto a
job where my cell phone became an essential communication tool that had to
be dependable when my company needed to contact me. Sprint was usually ok,
but I experienced the missed calls and late (as much as days late) voice
mail problems occasionally that most veteran Sprint PCS users are familiar
with. After doing some research I discovered ATTWS was renowned for it's
reliability, though slightly more pricey. So about 2 1/2 years ago I
decided to shell out the money and switch to ATTWS for their national one
rate plan. I'm not a heavy talker (500-1000 mins/month), but travel often
(95% within the US) and need reliability. ATTWS delivered, and I had a
reliable cell phone that has worked everywhere I've been. When I renewed my
1 year contract with ATTWS I received additional anytime and N/W minutes
which has made over usage a non-concern.

Times they change. Lately I seem to be experiencing small problems with my
ATTWS service. The calls have gotten less clear, and occasionally I will
miss a call entirely (though thankfully the voicemail always seems to show
up almost instantly so it has never caused a huge problem). It may be a
problem with my phone, but I suspect it's part of the conversion from TDMA
to GSM. My ATTWS contract expires in November and I'm trying to determine
    what to do.

I still need a reliable phone with good national coverage on top of
anything. I fear that ATTWS TDMA network will continue to deteriorate and
the GSM network still sounds FAR from adequate. With the GAIT phones almost
non-existent and the existent ones unattractive, I feel it may be time to
    depart from ATTWS.

Sprint is looking attractive. With ATTWS I have the National One Rate, with
my retention bonus on my last contract I get 550 Anytime 1000 N/W for
$59.99. With SprintPCS I could purchase a Free & Clear *WITH* Vision plan
with 500 Anytime Unlimited N/W and Unlimited Internet for $60.

The coverage for both are almost nationally inclusive, and both include free
roaming, but for the same price with Sprint I would get Unlimited Internet
on a faster data network. With ATTWS GSM is almost a non option with no
attractive GAIT phones, so data isn't an option really. Even if it were an
option I understand the GPRS network is slower than the CDMA and ATTWS isn't
unlimited (yes I'm aware there's stipulations with Sprints but I don't plan
on hooking it up to a laptop or anything). From friends who still use
Sprint in my home area (Northern Ohio) the old missed calls and late
voicemails seem to be nonexistent these days.

So back to Sprint I may go. I'm still reluctant because my service with
ATTWS has been satisfactory. But their transition to a digital network just
isn't smooth. Their TDMA is dying and their GSM seems very spotty from what
I hear. Being the internet junky I am, I have been craving a phone and plan
capable of data... Sprint seems far superior in that department as well.
Unlimited for $15 a month is extremely attractive. Even though I don't plan
on being a heavy data user I don't like the idea of having to count kb's.

I did read one post from a gentleman a few weeks back who made the exact
same transition I'm considering and he seemed extremely happy. Has anyone
else out there done the same, or considering it, and have anything to add?
I would appreciate any input. Thanks.

I would talk to some Sprint users in your area and in areas where you intend
    to travel frequently.

If you aren't planning on tethering a device to your phone for data usage
(i.e. laptop), then don't worry about it. You will not be in breach of
contract no matter how you slice and dice it (short of abuse with an applet
like one individual proposed out of spite). There is no KB counting that
you have to worry about. You will be hard pressed to cause significant
congestion with data usage from your Vision phone web browser ... unless you
start transfering lots of pictures around and even that is well within the
    bounds of your plan.

Just to expand on the other post, it's technically against the TOS to
connect a laptop to your phone and get Unlimited Vision. So far, it seems
likes SPCS is only going after the heavy laptop users, but that may change
    in the future.

SJSobol used to live in the Cleveland area, so his comments may be of

Re: SprintPCS to ATTWS to... SprintPCS??

I've used AT&T TDMA, AT&T GSM and SprintPCS. All in all, none of them
are *bad* but depending on what is important to you, some perform beter
than others. I'll give you my opinions, but keep in mind, my
experiences might differ from yours or others depending on the part of
the country you're in and where you travel, etc...

    SPCS PROS:
-One-rate type plan very competively priced
    -Cool Handsets
    -Data priced reasonably
-excellent customer-friendly website with lots of options to customize
it the way you want and do things for yourself
-excellent roaming agreements, even in analog areas, your calls find you
and voice works, albeit analog much of the time when roaming
-very good voice quality, especially in noisey environments
-1900 mhz system creates far less interfearance if you work around lots
    of electrical equipment
-good discount plan for large corps
-ability to haggle on price plans for old customers

    SPCS CONS:
-Lousy battery life on many of their handsets
    -Roaming is largely analog
-Cust service very much improved, but still lagging
-Vision is great when it works, but is plagued by congestion and
    frequent outtages
-NO SMS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can't stress this enough, and it's the
main thing that keeps me with AT&T and away from SPCS
-Voice calls go to voicemail when using data

    ATT TDMA PROS:
-good battery life.... i dont care what the specs say, all my TDMA
phones have better real-world battery life than my CDMA phones.
-excellent roaming agreements and overwhelming percentage of it is
    digital
    -excellent performing and reliable SMS
    -cool handsets (I like nokia!)
    -decent cust. service
-Only service available (TDMA) in much of the area in the Americas

    ATT TDMA CONS:
    -No data
-at&t native coverage not likely to expand beyond where it is now (Not a
    worry if you are one-rate)
-one rate more expensive than competition
-website somewhat limited in cust hands-on ability to customize and do
    things yourself
-not really willing to haggle or create customized plans other than what
    is available on their system

For me, AT&T's TDMA system seems pretty reliable and the sound, while
true does sometimes have rough handoffs, seems pretty decent to me.
However, with AT&T TDMA i would only go with a high-end Nokia product
and not one of the entry Nokias or Motorola products. I think the BEST
phones available right now on AT&T TDMA are the new Nokia 8265 and the
    old Nokia 6360.

AT&T's GSM systems data (to me) seems to be faster and work MUCH more
reliably than Sprints Vision. Having said that though, you get what you
pay for. AT&T can't touch SPCS's unlimited plan or T-Mobiles unlimited
plan. If all you want to do is check your email though speed would not
be a major concern, nor would price, only reliability and native
coverage of the provider your on. In addition one big plus (for me)
with GSM/GRPS data is the fact that voice calls come thorugh even if
your browsing the web. Nice if you're killing time playing on the net
or checking your email while waiting for a call.

To me it really sounds like you could benefit from AT&T's Multi-band
one-rate plan. I know you said you dont like the phones and i agree,
they are a little dated looking, but sound quality wise the Seimens
phone is really quite good. True there is no analog, but i've never
used analog on my AT&T phone before so i dont think a TDMA-GSM only
phone would be a problem coverage-wise. In addition, if your main city
has good GSM coverage, you could always take the sim out and use a GSM
only phone around town and keep your big ugly GSM/TDMA phone for
    traveling.

Depending on what parts of the country you live and play in, Verizons
one-rate type plan might be a good option also. Perhaps even the
americas choice with paying occasional roaming might be, by the year, a
good priced alternative with data & analog roaming. In California,
colorado, and the North East, Verizons coverage is great. Down south
it's limited though and you'll find yourself romaing on SPCS more often
that you prob want to=) Verizon is good, but before you get all wet
with excitment about their much touted JDPowers success, remember that
many younger high-volume users tend to gravitate towards T-Mobile and
SPCS. AT&T's network could be down for an entire week before my Dad
noticed it, but i'd notice within hours/minutes! So verizons success,
while perhaps much deserved, is not necessarily indicitive of the
experience everyone would have with their service.

One side note..... My father travels quite a bit, and initially used
Cingular analog, switched to Cingular TDMA, then to SPCS and recently
got a AT&T GSM phone. He's in his 70's but still pretty hip with
technology and uses maybe 30 minutes a month. In his intl travels he
loves his AT&T GSM phone, but in his travels around Texas, he often
finds himself using my Mom's Sprint phone. Hopefully that will change
in the future, but the future wont help you make a call today=) So in
the end, if you want good US coverage AND you want data, Sprint or
Verizon may be your 2 best choices. Be careful looking at Verizons
coverage maps though, they can be very missleading. Looking at their
"Advanced services" maps can be more of an indication of the service you
    can expect.

If *I* had unlimited funds and wanted my calls to find me wherever i
went i'd get an AT&T GSM phone as my main phone with optional forward
no-answer out of area and a seperate TDMA account one-rate as my backup.
You can't get around the globe coverage with only one phone technology
as of right now (well except sattelite phone, but thats REALLY
expensive). You have to have at minimum GSM and TDMA and preferably
also a seperate phone for Japan and a CDMA phone for other parts of asia
and much of the US that might not have GSM data, and only TDMA and CDMA
with TDMA having no data. Perhaps i'm an extreamist, ok, well, i admit
    it, i AM, but that's another story=)

Whatever you do it might be worth waiting until the end of the year.
With number portability right around the corner i suspect we might see
some attractive deals coming forth. Between AT&T, SPCS, Verizon, and
Cingular, the best of the best is not THAT much better than the worst of
the worst, so see what works good for you at your house and gives you
the features and options you want and need and a handset you enjoy and
    live it up!

    Best of Luck,

Many of us who regularly post here would say that Customer Service
(politely put) is the weak link for SprintPCS - still.

The only improvement I note in SprintPCS customer service is its
employees saying its improved. Others may have a different opinion,
NOBODY - not Sprint, not Verizon, not AT&T has "A" quality customer
service, but JD Power just rated Sprint as having been judged worst by a
    major consumer survey.

We didn't actually have trouble with that, not that I know of, until
we got here. We have had some issues here. Seems like we do occasionally
have to call Sprint to have them reset the MWI to get it working properly.

Actually, it did happen a couple times back home too. Not frequently,
but often enough to be mildly annoying.

Either Phillipe is saying I work for SPCS or that I've not said CS has
improved. Both of those statements are patently false. CS has made some
big improvements. They still have a ways to go before they are up to par,
    though.

I agree with you 100%!!! I've had some very good and very bad
experiences with both AT&T and Sprint. From long hold times to
uninformed employees to flat out rude behavior. I will say though that
overall i've had less of the bad experiences with AT&T. In addition i'm
not crazy about the fact Sprint now uses overseas employees to answer
    some of their calls.

Hey, Steve...admit it...you work for Sprint part-time, and you work
    for Verizon part-time.

Lest you say anything good about Nextel...you'll have to take up a
    third job!

    Heh.

Yes, they improved on hold times while increasing the number of calls it
takes to get a resolution. Overall, their CS is still ****ty.

Well, my father has four Nextel phones on a contract for his company
and has been satisfied with them for several years now.

I personally would go nuts with the sales reps DC'ing me like they
do all the time to him.

    There you go.

I did the switch from AT&T to Sprint this past February. I've never looked
back, and contrary to popular polls and unscientific studies, I've found
Sprint PCS's customer service to be superior to AT&T's. I remember back in
January, the hold times for "Next Generation" (i.e. GSM) CS were in the
HOURS, not minutes. I've heard it's better now, but I'm not going back.
