I have four secrets that cut WAY DOWN on junk calls I receive.
1. Have the phone company list you without address. Typically
telemarketers cover areas, and buy geographically sorted
phone directories from the phone company. I'm not listed in those!
It costs no extra to call your Baby Bell and say list me without address.
Its a poor-mans unlisted phone number.
2. When buying something by Credit Card and they ask for your phone
number either say "I decline to provide it", or memorize a phone
booth's number to give out.
3. Make a recording of the warbling sound one gets when connecting
to a disconnected phone number. Put that at the start of your
recording on your answering machine. Automatic recorded telemarketing
machines will "realize" your number is disconnected, stop the call, and
mark your number as disconnected, to not call again.
Instructions are here:

4. Every credit card you have or any bill you pay monthly, call up their
customer service and ask that your account be "annotated for privacy",
specifically your ophone number is not to be sold or given to
subsidiaries. It is crucial you do this with Baby Bells and any arm of
AOL Time Warner who are big offenders.

1991 Telephone Consumer Protection Act requires all telemarketing agencies
to keep a do-not-call list. the Direct Marketing Agency has a national DNC
for $5. just tell the telemarketer to add your name to the do not call list
or pay DMA $5 to add your name to it's national DNC. it usually takes about
a month for the calls to stop. TCPA also makes it illegal for telemarketers
to autodial cell phone numbers.
"In October 2001, Acacia National Mortgage Corp. settled a lawsuit with
Verizon Wireless by promising not to send text messages to Verizon cell
phone users." Hopefully, telemarketers will be included in these lawsuits in
the future.

Telemarketers follow their own rules about as well as Sprint CSRs do in
identifying themselves. The rules are observed in the breech. Machine
generated phone calls are not to happen, Hah ! When I used to have 2
phone lines with sequential #'s 90% of telemark calls called the first
number, and then the 2nd number 1/2 second later. Such sequential dially
is also illegal but usually done cause its not detected 99.9% of the
time.
The Federal rules have STIFF fines. That makes folks take notice.
Voluntary industry rules are for show only.

Interesting, I'll give it a shot.

Do Not Call lists with individual companies are less than half useless,
unless you are content with having to get a call from every single
telemarketing company out there before the calls go away.

And what is the penalty for ignoring the DMA list? Or for not being a
member at all? I get calls from various local dorks trying to sell me
windshield repair, carpet cleaning, etc.

Yeah, those ANM folks were real bastards. I remember seeing of of them on
TV whining like a little girl because "some companies can't afford other
advertising" or some such crap.

Er, that should have been either "more than half useless" or "less than half
usefull."

Almost all of the prerecorded sales calls that come in are flat
illegal according to the 1991 TCPA. Check out www.tcpaliitigation,
www.junkfaxes.org, and the links provided there. You can sue them
directly.
Don't believe that you can "get your name off lists". The game is
rigged to get to you.

If they do it by computer the computer gets tricked by this method.
IT DOES WORK.

Not really. It works with one currently popular implementation of
auto calling systems. Your opponents are at least as smart as you
and over time, both sides improve their technology.

True, but if you argue long-term enough we might as well all shut off our
service and hide under the bed. I want to know about what works NOW, and
when that loses it's edge I will move on to whatever comes next.
