Has anyone used SprintPCS in southern China and Hong Kong? They claim to
have roaming but I would be interested in whether it is decent.
TIA,
Robert

According to cdg.org, there is no CDMA coverage in Hong Kong ... So, if
there is any roaming, it would be via GSM, and you would need to use a GSM
phone ...

Re: Coverage in China/Hong Kong?
Yes, I know that, thanks. I am interested in whether anyone has had
experience using SpringPCS in southern China/Hong Kong and whether the
experience was good or bad.

Robert, SPCS is not in Hong Kong or South China. If SPCS has any roaming
agreements there, it will be with another provider, and with a GSM phone ...
In addition, SPCS international roaming costs a bunch ... You might be able
to find a more inexpensive way to keep in contact.
What I would suggest is go into the alt.cellular newsgroup, explain that you
will be going to South China, and ask for recommendations on the best and
cheapest way to make and receive calls there ... You might include the
length of time you will be there and whether you expect to make & receive a
lot of calls.

Re: Coverage in China/Hong Kong?
So then why did they need this PRL update to supposedly add roaming
coverage in Hong Knog if wouldn't work anyway?

Sprint PCS didn't consult Bob Smith before they released a PRL update for a
region that they don't even support.

LOL ... Speaking of which, we haven't heard an official line yet on what
changes were in the new PRL, have we? I know some people have put in some
thoughts, but nothing coming in from SPCS.
Rob, can you look into this and see if you can get anything to pass on?

Re: Coverage in China/Hong Kong?
Ok I'm not so sure I believe that there is no CDMA coverage in Hong
Kong. I have a newsletter from Sprint that clearly states that
International roaming is available in Hong Kong with a dual
band/tri-mode CDMA phone. Not a GSM phone. I don't think they would
falsely advertise like that.

Larry, after you posted the prior message, and the above one, I went looking
through all the newsletters I've received, and couldn't find anything. Could
you do a copy & paste, and post it here?
Thanks, Bob

Re: Coverage in China/Hong Kong?
From the Fall/Winter 2001 newsletter:
With a dual-band or dual band/tri-mode Sprint PCS phone you can make
and receive calls while off the digital Sprint PCS Nationwide Network.
Dual-band/tri-mode phone required in Hong Kong, New Zealand, Brazil and
Argentina.
From the Spring 2003 newsletter:
International roaming: PCS International Roaming with a PCS phone from
Sprint is now available in the following locations, including parts of
Central and South America. *
U.S. Areas: Guam, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands.
Central and South America: Argentina, Colombia, Chile, Guatemala,
Uruguay, Bolivia, Ecuador, Paraguay.
Asia/Pacific: Hong Kong, New Zealand, China.
Canada, Mexico, The Caribbean.
-There was a note with PRL 10021 that it 'restored' roaming service in
Hong Kong. Whatever that means.

but whats the price per minute with a standard USA plan?
Can you buy a block of minutes at a discount from SprintPCS?
It might still be far cheaper to rent a GSM phone.
Check with your travel agent.
