The display settings menu (I think) has an auto backlight option to make the
backlight come on automatically at a specified time. I never used it, so I
don't know if this is how it would behave.

I have never had a Samsung with weird problems like that, but it wouldn't be
the first phone to go crazy.

Good thought... I thought I had checked that, but wasn't 1,000% sure, so
I just went back and checked it again, and it was disabled. I just got
the new (refurbished) phone today, so I'm gonna see how it does for a
couple of days before sending my original phone back to them. Thanks for
    the suggestion, tho.

I am curious if the backlight for the main color display also comes on. Can
you see through the side if the color display is on also? Maybe it's a
    defective hinge switch.

I think it was.. and I thought of that, but even if you open this phone
all the way up, it doesn't stay lit up for 13 straight minutes (and
    counting). So, I dunno...
