I'm about to sign up for a tMobile pre-paid account.
Just on GPs, I'd prefer to buy my own unlocked GSM phone because the service is
such a commodity and I might want to switch to another carrier (Cingular) in the
future.
OTOH, it seems like a minor hassle to locate/evaluate/purchase an unlocked phone
when I could just take what tMobile offers and unlock it if/when the need
arises.
So, bottom line, is being able to unloc a tMobile/Nokia GSM phone a realistic
expectation?

The option is whether to spend time now or later. Can you
realistically find a way to unlock the phone reliably when
you need it? Think about it!

Good point. I just browsed a few of the unlock-related sites.
Noticed the "5 strikes and yer out" feature....
