Are there any prepaid plans which have good service in NY(C)/NH/ME/VT ?
    Preferably GSM?
Cingular prepaid has much worse service in NH/MW/VT than their regular
    plans do.

    Thanks

    JoshIII responds:

CDMA coverage for ME, NH, and VT is good. Coverage in these three states for
the most part is by a carrier or carriers other than Verizon.

So if you were to get Verizon prepaid or Inpulse at Walmart or Page Plus
Cellular, you would be roaming allot in those areas, and it would be more
    expensive.

Generally, prepaid is more expensive per minute than any post paid
plan. For an emergency use only cellphone, prepaid is the plan of choice.

If you need a cellphone for emergency use only, I would recommend a CDMA
model TracFone. It roams on any available carrier, if no home carrier
signals are present, and at no additional cost per minute. Although, when
roaming with a CDMA model TracFone, the cost per minute is twice the local
calling area rate, i.e., 2 units per minutes instead of 1 unit per minutes
    for local calling area calls.

In other words, the roaming rate would stay the same regardless of the
carrier your CDMA model TracFone is using when roaming.

Go to www.tracfone.com and choose "Coverage Maps". Then enter the zipcode
where you plan to activate your cellphone. It will show you the coverage
maps for the CDMA model TracFones and the GSM (Single Rate) model TracFones,
    which will be different.

Ideally, for CDMA model TracFones, you want to see your local calling area
as large as possible, i.e., to include parts of two or more states. Then
you would rarely need to roam. If your local calling area is only one or
two counties, you would be roaming allot, and then a CDMA TracFone is not
    your best choice.

The current CDMA model TracFones that are available, but hard to find are:
    c343
    2126
    v120
    v60i(cdma)
    2285(digital only)
    5180i(single band only)

    Hope this helps!

Re: Prepaid plans which have good service in NY(C)/NH/ME/VT ?

Thanks - I'll look into it (and I gather you deal commerically with
Tracfone, so would be a bit prejudiced :-) ).

To clarify, the story is this... It's for someone who is from abroad,
    to use for 2 WEEKS.

1.5 days will be in Canada (I doubt any prepaid will roam in Canada -
Cingular doesn't) and 4 days will be travelling between upstate NY to
get to Canada and back to NYC and touring via ME/VT/NH. The rest of the
time, they will be in NYC (where Cingular prepaid is fine).

I have an unlocked GSM phone I can lend them and Cingular will activate
the phone on a prepaid plan with a new GSM card for nothing. Thus, the
ONLY cost, is the cost of the prepaid plan.

Is there anything economical (including either a cheap/free phone or
using my GSM phone) which can be used in this situation.

    i would get a Tracfone.
You can get one for $19.99 with a bunch of minutes.
I have found that my US Tracfone works in Toronto and Montreal. I also had
good service in NY, Conn and Mass.

You can get a phone, a 60 minute air time card and 120 extra free minutes
for $19.99 by sending an email to
    tracfone AT alex4all.com.
You will receive an email from the Tracfone company.
Look in your inbox or bulk mail folder for it.
