Re: " iPhone or the Droid"

Well, really there's no comparison. It's actually a bit frustrating when people compare the two devices.

The DROID has its purpose and I guess the iPhone might have its purpose, somewhere.

The iPhone has a superior music player compared to the DROID, but the DROID's speaker is superior (so if you enjoy Pandora or Slacker Radio, the DROID may be better for playback).

The DROID has a keyboard. In fact, it has 3 of them! It has a portrait one, landscape one, and a full real QWERTY keyboard. It's pretty convenient. Some people may not enjoy a QWERTY keyboard. If that's the case, ignore it even exists. It isn't noticeable on the phone. But for those who love a QWERTY, the iPhone is a bad, bad choice as you have an absolute touch screen device with no flexibility.

The DROID has an amazing speak to search service. Speak "Navigate to Wal-Mart"...it navigates you to the nearest Wal-Mart. Something even cooler is "Navigate to the museum with the King Tut Exhibit"...so even if you don't know the name of the place, if you know about it...you'll still arrive there.

The DROID also has a large array of other features, like the fast growing Android Market. Yes, it is smaller than Apple's market, but it is growing...very fast (5 times faster than the Apple one ever has)...this is because of the openness of the Android Market...compared to Apple's selectiveness.

This is all I have to say at the moment. Feel free to post questions that are specific and I'll go into more detail for you (and you might get more responses from others!).

    Thanks

I say it's like this. Get an iPhone (wait until the next one) and you won't regret it. You'll get used to the on-screen keyboard very quickly, if you are willing to give it a try. Get a DROID and you might regret it. At the end of the day, it's all about the apps and until DROID catches up and also give the flawless user experience, you should get an iPhone.

I was on the fence right until I got the phone and started downloading my apps. After that, I have been and continue to be free marketing for Apple.

Re: " iPhone or the Droid"

I depends on what you are looking for in a phone. If you are like me and want the latest and greatest phones, then I recommend the Droid because the Android operating system is constantly evolving and being put on the latest phones. While this is great for people wanting the latest tech, this creates minor bugs to work out in the software.

With the iPhone you are stuck with one hardware configuration (2 if you count the memory size) until Apple decides to release the next model. While the operating system on the iPhone is solid, its already starting to grow long in the tooth. It doesn't support multitasking like the Android operating system and there is no desktop customization or widgets. To me, the entire iPhone platform is too sterile for my tastes. There is nothing to separate you from any other person who owns an iPhone.

Re: " iPhone or the Droid"

My co-worker has a new Droid (a couple months) and I have a new 3GS iPhone (a couple months.)

A Droid is very similar and does have a flash for the camera. (iPhone has no flash but does have video and even video editing right on the phone.)

While the apps are improving for the Droid, there's not nearly as many as for the iPhone.

AFter talking with me and playing with my iPhone, my co-worker now wishes he would've gotten the iPhone.

    For what it's worth...

What about Droid vs Eris? I personally don't like moving parts to phone, e.g Droid's keyboard, and no doubt will become accustomed to virtual keyboard for limited messaging I do (not writing long emails or docs). So question to me instead of iPhone or Droid, is iPhone or Eris.

Re: " iPhone or the Droid"

If you were comparing the DROID vs. the DROID Eris based on features, the DROID by Motorola is the way to go. It has extensive features like navigation with Google and more.

This may be changing since the DROID Eris has (or will be getting) Android 2.1, which will make the features more extensive.

I recommend the Eris for the less-business person. People who like the phone but don't necessarily need all the features. When compared to the iPhone, I'd say choose the Eris for 1) you don't like the network the iPhone operates on, 2) You like a fully customizable device, 3) you enjoy batteries and memory that can be expanded, changed, or upgraded.

The Eris also has a better interface than the iPhone with the HTC Sense User Interface.

Many thanks for taking the time. I am indeed a non-business user. The 2.1 is what I would wait for in Eris, seems to be delayed a bit, but have been told it's coming. Google nav is something I would want, and expect 2.1 would give me that. Do you know any differently? Also, I like the more private interface of Eris over iPhone, have to touch down the screen to reveal full details of who's calling, so at least part of info is more private than on iPhone's fully lit billboard approach to saying call or message coming in or waiting.

Would you please take a look at my post about privacy? I'm surprised others haven't picked up on that, seems it should be a hot topic. It's in the "General Phone Discussion" forum. My current old dumb flip Samsung x427m is very private, when I set to "light only", I get tiny light that slowly blinks (every 5 seconds or so) in corner of closed housing, hard to notice, only I usually ever see it, which is the way it should be, no ones business when a call or msg is coming in or waiting, much less who is calling or messaging. When I flip the phone open, I see the details, my choice, not everyone's around me. I've spoken to both ATT and Verizon people, neither can find a way to set preferences on the iPhone and Eris to being anywhere near that private. User can darken the screens, and there's the polarized sheet you can add over the screen so people along side have problem seeing in, but nowhere as good a solution as just being able to put in some "private" mode and having a tiny light blinking somewhere on screen telling you something is coming in or waiting in inbox. To me seems a real shortfall on both full screen phones. You have any input on that?

I also have post up in "General Phone Discussion" forum asking whether it's the phone or the system that dictates ATT (or maybe just iPhone, unclear on that) being able to have call and internet open at same time, while Verizon phones apparently can't do that. Maybe you can help with that. And a related question not asked there, what's the difference between being able to do this and being able to "dual task", having two aps open at same time? Maybe you could help with that too.

Thank you, thank you, thank you ....
