How come mp3 songs in iPhones can't be used a ringtone? What can you say about that?

Go to iTunes. Convert the MP3 into a ringtone and sync it back with your iPhone. Then you can select the converted song as your ringtone. It's pretty simple.

How to make your own ringtones

iTunes will convert an mp3 to an iPhone ringtone for an extra 99 cents over the amount they charge you for the song. Which is crap, IMHO.

Clip out 30 seconds or so of the song to use for your ringtone, using any of a hundred freeware mp3 editors. Import the mp3 clip into your iTunes library. Right-click on it, and select 'Create AAC Version'. Let that process finish, then click-drag the newly created AAC version out of iTunes, and onto your desktop. Change the filename extension from .m4a to .m4r, which is the default iPhone ringtone extension. Double-click on the file you just renamed. iTunes will play your clip, and add it into your ringtones folder. Sync your iPhone with iTunes, and Bob's yer uncle.

Or use a third-party iPhone ringtone maker program. iRinger looks promising, but I haven't played with it yet.

My intallation of iTunes (version 9.0.3.15) will only create a ringtone from a song if I buy the song from the iTunes Store. If you have a work-around for this other than what I've posted above, please share it here for the benefit of the community.

Since I already have about 1.2 TB of music, I doubt I'll be throwing Apple a bone for more anytime soon. Hence, the work-arounds I've posted.
