    No additional software required

I kinda hate to say it, but this is a classic case of 'you don't need more software.' In particular, you don't need to buy more software. any modern version of Windows is quite capable of doing what you need in this instance, all by itself.

Disclaimer: The PC used in this example is running Windows Vista x64, with iTunes v9.0.3.15 installed. The phone is a 32 GB iPhone 3GS, running OS 3.1.3. If your configuration is different, then your mileage may vary.

Connect your iPhone to your PC, using the supplied (with the iPhone) USB dock cable. After a moment, you should see a popup dialog box similar to this:

Click on 'Open device to view files using Windows Explorer.' A Windows Explorer window will open, displaying the contents of your iPhone.

Double-click (or select and then open, whatever) Internal Storage. You'll get this:

Drill down a couple more layers, and you'll get to the actual list of files. The whole process takes about ten seconds, unless your machine is really, really slow.

When you arrive at the list of files, you can copy, move, view, or delete them, just as though they were resident on your hard drive. This is the contents of your iPhone Camera Roll. Select what you want, drag-and-drop them wherever you like, and Bob's yer uncle.
    Better living through technology?

First you need to authorize your PC with your iTunes account with iTunes if you haven't already done so. With your iPhone connected to iTunes and without syncing, at the iTunes menu bar go to File and select Transfer Purchases From - the name of your iPhone.
