ok, i brought this upon myself....
i have a cdm 8910 with verizon, a data cable and use QPST. ive so far been able to download pictures off the phone to my PC, and also loaded a few mp3 ringtones onto the phone, and got them to work fine.
despite generally good instructions, i was unable to get zaudiex to fix my download_snd.txt file. is it supposed to work with this phone/carrier?? all i got was an error message that said "Index file was not valid! File size was 743." ...so without that key piece, i edited download_snd.txt manually in notepad.
the part that really confuses is, i got it to work with the first four mp3 ringtones i put on the phone.i rebooted the phone, and all 4 tones were detected, and played fine. however, when i uploaded 4 more, and tried to manually edit download_snd.txt again, the whole phone went all to hell, and wont even start up. when it powers on, it comes to the welcome screen, then pops up an error message that says "please wait, user data is being restore... [7]", then it reboots... and its stuck in this endless cycle of rebooting and "please wait".
so, obviously, i &%#$'ed up my firmware....
i have the old download_snd.txt file backed up on my PC, and i'd like to swap it back onto the phone again, but i cant do crap if the phone wont fully power on! is there anyway around this?? please tell me theres something i can do without replacing the whole phone...

You could probably reflash the firmware. (You'd need to buy a cable though)

Have you tried to power the phone up with the cable plugged into the phone? Sometimes it will boot up that way.
Also, have you tried to remove the battery while the phone is starting up or in it's endless cycle? Sometime, that will do a reset of the phone.
Just throwing suggestions out here for ya to try.

when its in that cycle trying to power up, removing the battery is the only way to stop it... the power button is unresponsive. and i tried it plugged in to the cable and unplugged, neither worked. and when it is plugged in, i cant access it through the PC, since the com port it talks through doesnt become active until the phone is 'fully' powered up, which it never actually reaches.
how would i reflash the firmware? that would fix it for sure, but i cant think how to do it in the state its currently in.
thanks for the suggestions guys, anything that saves me the cost of a new phone is much appreciated!

I'm just guessing here, but I know that when CUPST connects to the phone it puts it into a service mode that "might" override the continuous reboot.

well, the return went good... for the second time! lol ...yeah this phone i broke here was the SECOND time i broke a 8910, the first one i did the exact same thing, and returned it... got my second one, broke it again, and returned it too...
so, with two phones now dead by my hands, are there other phones you guys might suggest to be a little more stable? i hear alot about "the 8910's firmware is fragile", so what phones out there have people had better luck with?
im thinking about 3 other phones in particular, with verizon... the motorola E815, LG VX8100, and samsung SCH A950. all 3 seem pretty similar, and feature bluetooth and MP3 built in, although a big drawback seems to be that none of 3 are able to connect a laptop to the internet?? is this true?? i use my phone for that now on occasion when i travel for work, and not having that feature would set me back

I gotta be real close to flashing my phones, because I have been lookin at all kinds of stuff I have never seen on a cell phone before...so, you think that if I type in the spc I got off the phones into qpst that it'll allow me to flash the dang things? By looking into the nam programming I was able to see the real spc...not sure about the msl though

The "real" SPC tends to often be the MSL. The SPC is usually a simple repeated code like 111111 or 000000.
To do the flash you'll need CUPST, a cable, and the flash file from the carrier you're going to. (There's a link to CUPST on cellphonehacks)Last edited by TakenAback; 11-12-2005 at 12:49 AM.

Cupst
I have looked all over cellphonehacks and I haven't seen a cupst link anywhere . If you happen to have cupst on your computer can you email me the file? [email protected]. I went to a couple of shops here locally and they weren't able to help me...I actually called my provider and they have been really helpful.
I'll get back later with good news hopefully

I repeatedly told you where to get it. You need to check your past threads for replies.
Checking your PMs would be a good idea too.
