Hi, I want to connect a bluetooth adapter to a milling machine, which has an RS232 serial port. I was planning to use a parallel-to-serial converter so that I can connect a USB Bluetooth dongle to the port, but I realized that the Bluetooth dongle requires drivers, meaning that it should be connected to a computer. So, is there a bluetooth adapter that I can directly connect to the machine without the need to go through any setup/installation process? For example, I would like the Bluetooth adapter to be in discoverable mode once connected to the machine, among other things. Thanks!

Well, regardless the bluetooth adapter is going to need drivers to work correctly. I assume the serial port on the milling machine is meant to hook up to a computer to control it, correct?

Well, yes, the machine hooks up to a computer via the RS232 port. But I wanted to replace that cable connection with a wireless connection.

I've seen some people using Bluetooth modules (like Bluesmirf) and building a circuit. Once the connections are done, the Bluesmirf blinks instantly, denoting that it is discoverable already! I needed exactly that, but I was wondering whether there was an easier option so that I don't have build such circuit.

Yeah, that sounds tricky. It's one thing to go from serial to usb, but then to bluetooth. rs232 doesn't even give you power like usb ports do.

You may be better off spending money on a longer serial cable.
