My old Cingular phone got dropped in the water...everything still works but the display!

So I'm looking to purchase a used phone off ebay (don't want to sign a new contract w/ Cingular). CHowever, how can I be sure the phone I'm getting will work on my Cingular plan and network?

I've gotten conflicting answers even from Cingular customer service. One told me it has to be Cingular phone, and a TDMA system (which my old one is). Another told me it also has to have been made for my geographical area (Illinois).

And then if I get a new/used phone, how do I program it with my number?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide!

Do you know what service it originally came from? If it is not a cingluar phone you would have to unlock it. And to use the same number you would have to talk to a CSR to keep your current number.

    Thanks for your reply, translusion!

I'm looking at phones for sale on ebay ...there are lots that are listed as Cingular, so I'd get one of those. And I've talked with CSR's at Cingular, and they've said they'd talk me through putting my current number on the new phone.

However, I've gotten conflicting advice from the CSR's at Cingular about how to determine if a particular phone will be compatible. Is it sufficient that it's just a Cingular phone? One told me it actually has to have been sold in/for my geographic area ... and of course on ebay it's hard to know that.

I've seen the term "unlock" in ref. to cell phones, but don't know what that means. Does that mean I could use a non-Cingular phone w/ a Cingular plan? Or am I better to just stick with a Cingular phone?

TDMA is tough. You probably be best to search for TDMA Cingular on EBAY. Look up your old phone on Phonescoop.com and look for the same specs on Ebay. Life would be easier for you if you had GSM.

Cingular? Water? sorry but I just couldn't resist... Cingular and water? Hum... maybe we could just DROWN the bastards! Then they wouldn't be able to steal money from customers anymore!

just kidding... I really don't think they need any more help in totally ruining their company. They seem to be doing a perfectly fine job by themselves!
