Since I'm moving to NYC in a few months, I've been researching options on cell phones. I'm currently on a Nation plan. Some friends are telling me that I can keep my West Coast phone number and incur no additional charges or penalties while in New York. Others are telling me the exact opposite and saying I'll need to get a new contract and New York phone number.

To complicate matters, the fine print in Cingular's plan terms say "Customer must ... have a mailing address and live in the immediate geographic area in which subscription is made." This sounds like if I decide to keep my current phone number in NY, I'll be penalized for living 3,000 miles away from where I signed my contract. When I called Cingular, none of the reps I talked to understood what this clause in the terms meant.

If anyone has experience with cross-country moves, I'd appreciate your help!

you could move to New York and have a friend forward your mails to you and pay your bill online.

Good answer but Naz and I would suggest that keep on calling until you get to the right person. If one person doesn't do it, it doesn't mean that all of them wouldn't do it. Keep on trying until you find that one person who is willing to change it for your. Good luck.
