Problems with my computer

Other than stopping just short of crashing, what percentage rate do you think is a good one to stick by when overclocking a cpu.

Hi really depends on cpu type and motherboard I think Personally I never O/C any machines it just causes overheating and instability problems.

I agree with strummer...my friend attempted to overclock his machine by only 10%. Everything should have been ok, however, his mother board ended up getting fried. If you're going to overclock it, though, you'll to do it at least 20%, otherwise you won't notice an improvement and you'll be putting your computer in needless danger!

I also agree with Strummer! In addition to his reasons--O/C PC's also prematurely ages the electronic circuitry in PC's.

True it stresses the electronics, but unless you are planning on keeping your PC and extraordinarily long time, the damage is so slow that anybody that is into overclocking would have replaced most to all of their components by the time any noticable damage is done. Overclockers tend to like to have the lastest and greatest components and upgrade more often than most PC users.

If you understand how chips are assigned their speeds, and that some chips are labeled at speeds beneath their operating threshold, the logic of overclocking to achieve the most power that is feasibly stable makes sense.

If you are going to overclock the cpu, than you might consider putting in heavy duty cooling for the processor, board, and case to ensure good air flow. If you can keep the temp down than it should work much better.

I usually overclock P3s about 20 percent; don't even try and OC Pents or P2s. P4s can handle a bit better, 30-40%. Celerons don't take well to OCing, but Athlons can handle about as well as a P4. I've never tried to OC anything else. And remember to supercool EVERYTHING. I've got eight fans in my Athlon machine and I watercool my P4.
