BIIIIIIIG PROBLEM.........need anti-virus recommendation

Hey guys! I'm having a bit of a problem..........viruses r on my computer which r being sent by email to me.

I use Outlook Express, so it opens automatically b4 i can delete it.

My current anti-virus is the EAnthology package and Of course ive run an anti-virus check........BUT after listing about like 18 viruses (?!?!?) it hits another virus and just closes by itself!!

My system is now very slow and Im asking if anyone knows of a small anti virus for a very small system.........2.5 GB HDD, Pent. 2........yes i know its up with the dinosaur ages

Any help, opinions or recommendations will be gr8ly appreciated!!!!!!!!

A free package from a company called grisoft call AVG..
works a treat

seeing as though you are already infected..you mey need to download the demo first...clean up your system then uninstall and install the free version to keep your system virus free from that point.

I'm using Norton 2001. Takes up 65mb on my hard disk. Updates available on the net, so easy to keep up-to-date. I'm also using a Pentium 2 and a notebook with P 1 only.. No probs. I like it.

I would Norton Anti-Virus 2002 - Older versions seemed to be large resource pigs, but 2002 is a bit better better. Still can be a pig though. It is a total protection package, that will scan your in/outbound emails too. A little buggier than some other AV's but a good set up. (I use this) http://www.symantec.com/nav/

F-Secure Anti-Virus is an excellent package - I've used in the past. It is decent on system resources. http://www.f-secure.com/

Avast32 is good. It does have a weakness in that some very old viruses are not included in its database - but they are so old, they are no around much anymore. http://www.avast.com/

Otherwise, you could try KAV (Kaspersky Antivirus)

Viruses are a pain in the ass... And I'm sure most of us here would love to horse-whip cowardly little F**KERS that delight in ruining other peoples data.

Use Norton 2001 now and like it.
Tried the Demo of PCCillin first, but couldn't stand it. But it did help clean out the 12 different viruses I had on my computer before I installed an antivirus.
I like Norton. Very easy and automatic.

McAfee is a good virus protecting program and you can set it so that it reads your emails as they download. Go to their site and you can download a free trial version.

Have used Norton Anti-Virus for the past 5 years without a single glitch!! It can be set up to scan email as it is downloaded or uploaded so as not to infect yourself and others. I think McAfee was bought out by Symantec(who makes Norton software), but don't quote me on that...I just remember a bit of info from that past on something like that!

ah ha! it turns out to be a w32.klez virus, i can't use the anti-virus so i've downloaded a norton tool, now i just have to figure out how to use it

serena, instad of farting about with anti-virus packets at the moment, what you need to do is get all your important files outta there NOW and nuke the enitre system. I'm gonna take you through doing it on a win95 system (as best i can remember) but you will need to print this out 1st.

1st, make sure you have a boot disk that allwoes you to reconise the CDROM in dos.

then click start -> shutdown -> restart in msdos mode.

when the computer re-boots it will stop at "C:\>" (assumeing drive "C" is your hard-drive) Type in "Format C:\" and answer yes to any questions about loseing all data.

The computer will then wipe ALL the info out of the system. includeing the virus. when that is done. it will give you a little bit of info on the hard drive. ignore that, you dont need to know it.

Now, put your windows 95 install CD into your CDROM and type "D:\" and hit enter (Assumeing "D" is the letter of your CD ROM, if not, type the correct letter or keep typeing in different letters from "D" onwards untill the computer reconises one)

when the computer is sitting there at "D:\>" (Assumeing "D" is the letter of your CDROM) type in "setup.exe" this will then load your windows 95 setup programe and re-install windows 95.

the rest of the process is explaned on screen. but before you actually start the setup, unplug everything EXEPT your mouse, keyboard monitor and power leads. when this has all finished. the computer should come back on, on it's origonal startup mode.

You will need driver CD'S for all your additional haardware (I.E Scanner, printer, modem etc)

or for even better info on nukeing your whole system, call your computer manufacture. you might be a lucky on and have a "re-load and restore CD"

But once your computer is back on, the 1ST thing you do is get a GOOD virus scanner. get McAfee or Norton theyare the best and they use the least memory (McAfee is the best for memory) THEN once you install that UPDATE YOUR VIRUS DEFINITIONS STRIAGHT AWAY!!!! THEN re-install all your programs and restore your files from the back-ups. ofcourse, virsu-check the back-ups 1st!!

I got a fully cracked Norton 2002 from kazza. It runs itself and tells me if there is a virus in my e-mails or downloads. It quarantines the virus, then goes online to get the required update and zapps it.

It's excellent.
