It's official: Apple plans to offer a 4G version of its iPad 3, with both Verizon and AT&T having access to each. There is no word yet as to whether or not Apple will be offering the tablets – or an upgraded version – to T-Mobile or Sprint.

Apple's third version of its super-popular tablet will include a Gobi 4000 LTE chip in its design and will make it the first device from the Cupertino, CA-based company to include such technology.

With Apple confident enough to move forward on deploying an LTE unit that operates in conjunction with iOS, the groundwork seems to be finalized for a deployment of the iPhone 5 with the same technology. The iPhone 5 is due for release later this year.

Neglecting to include such a technology in the upcoming devices' constructs would prove to be quite dangerous; as more and more devices deploy with LTE capabilities and with such a difference in speed between the two technologies, Apple could isolate itself by holding on to older technologies.

In previous years, Apple has been known to lag other companies in deploying new technology but with Apple's dominating hold on the tablet market, the company is under increased pressure to remain at the forefront and to retain market share. Apple also hopes to further solidify its hold in the wireless carrier market when it comes to tablets.

From sketches available on the internet, it appears that Apple is planning a slightly larger design to encompass a larger battery. While both the iPad and iPad 2 have great battery life, LTE technology drains battery life at a faster rate than 3G access does. This has left Apple with the mandate to spare making the iPad 3 thinner and lighter than its predecessor.

If Apple deploys 4G technology on the iPad 3, it will be positioned to have the fastest data speeds available on a tablet that is already considered the best in the world.
