The HTC DROID DNA has opened the flood gates for 5-inch full HD 1080p displays on smartphones and as a result we're now expecting many other manufacturers to launch 1080p devices throughout the entirety of year 2013. The Samsung Galaxy S4 is expected to arrive with such a display, LG is also said to work on a new flagship device bearing the same characteristic and Sony is preparing to launch not one, but two 5-inch smartphones in the near future.

To be more precise, the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL –previously known as the Yuga and Odin- share the same overall hardware so they are basically the same device, but the design differs slightly and each one of these handsets is destined for a different market.

The good news is that, if you're a Sony enthusiast and you'd like to own one of these two handsets then you might be able to do so pretty soon. Although the company has not issued a press release just yet, both the Xperia Z and Xperia ZL have been spotted on the manufacturer's website. Furthermore, if we're to believe the latest reports, both handsets –or at least the Xperia Z- should be officially unveiled during CES in about a week.

In terms of hardware specs, once again Sony has not revealed anything of the sorts but according to leaks and rumors the Xperia Z will be waterproof and it should be made available in Asia –a mobile market where rugged, waterproof smartphones are held in high regard- and both gadgets should arrive with similar specs including the 5-inch 1080p display, a quad-core 1.5 GHz Snapdragon CPU, 2 GB of RAM, Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean out of the box and a 12 or 13 MP camera on the back.

It's also worth pointing out that judging by the leaked picture above, the Xperia ZL (to the left) comes in a smaller package and features a front facing camera that has been positioned in the bottom-right corner of the front panel.

That's all for now but we're bound to find out more starting with January 8 when the gates at CES 2013 will open.
