Re: need help on buying a cell phone!!!...any suggestions???
What cellular carrier are we talking about? They won't be able to activate "any" phone from that list of manufacturers because in the USA there are primarily 3 different cellular technologies being used by the major providers, and for example, the Razr or Slvr would never work on Sprint because they are GSM phones and Sprint uses CDMA. Before anyone tries to correct me, yes Verizon has a version of the Razr (V3c - the "c" stands for CDMA) but it's only compatible with Verizon because US CDMA providers don't generally activate each other's phones.
If you're talking about a GSM provider (Cingular, T-Mobile) then yes, they could activate ANY GSM phone as long as it has the 850mhz and 1900mhz bands. Well, they could activate it without those bands but it wouldn't work very well (if at all) in the US. If you're talking about (the big 3 CDMA providers) Sprint, Alltel, or Verizon, they will only activate phones already branded with their logo.
Again, before someone tries to start a debate, I have heard rumors of people getting Verizon or Alltel to activate other company's phones, but it's a big no-no and the rep who agrees to do it can get in trouble, so if you call them and ask they will almost always say NO, so if you spend money on the phone and can't get them to activate it you're out a phone.
So, let us know which company you're talking about first, and otherwise I hope the rest of my rambling has helped you learn something about the world of cell phones.
Oh yeah, before I forget... Welcome to the forums!Last edited by Brad729; 07-18-2006 at 12:50 PM.
