This is probably a silly question, but as I am not happy with my carrier, T-Mobile, I'd like to switch. My Razr V3 was bought from them but I have no monthly plan. I purchase cards instead. This is getting expensive (28 cents per minute). I would like to change carriers, but I think it's impossible. If I get a plan from T-Mobile then I lose-out on getting a free phone. Any advice? Thanks.

Sorry to hear you are unhappy with T-Mobile. They are by far the best carrier I've run across. Be careful because the grass isn't usually greener on the other side.

Assuming you are in the United States and that you want to use a nationwide carrier, your only other option is AT&T/Cingular. Depending on what market you are in, AT&T/Cingular's service is some where between bad and above average. In Southern California for instance, AT&T/Cingular is rated very poorly by both J.D. Power and Consumer Reports. As I noted, AT&T/Cingular's service can be spotty. But there is one thing they are extremely consistent about and that is having the highest prices everywhere. Yup, mediocre service and the highest prices are AT&T/Cingular's hallmark.

Your only option is AT&T/Cingular because you have a GSM phone. T-Mobile and AT&T/Cingular are the only nationwide carriers in the USA. You could go to another carrier, Verizon/Sprint/Alltel -who use CDMA, or Nextel who uses iDen. T-Mobile and AT&T/Cingular are the only two with global capabilities (in other words, the only two who have phones who will work in most cool places you may want to visit overseas).

You can flash and flex your T-Mobile phone to unbrand it but you'd probably have to get it unlocked before you can do that and T-Mobile is unlikely to unlock a phone they've given you for free to use their service.
