    Hi,

I was wondering if there is a prepaid *or paid if that is the only way* cell service that will allow you to call the US from India? I am planning a trip to India next month, and I would like to be able to call home to let my family and friends know that I am doing okay while I am away. Right now, I have a Verizon Wireless paid plan phone, but I really don't want to take it on the trip...in case it gets lost or stolen. I was thinking of buying a prepaid phone for the trip, and for later as a back up to my Verizon set. Most all of the prepaid phones allow you to make international calls from the US...but I haven't found any that allow you to make calls going the other way. Any help would be most appreciated!

You could purchase a cheap quad-band GSM phone and buy prepaid SIM cards in India. This way you can just pop in the SIM card and you're good to go.

Go here. Prices range from very expensive to cheap. I use a Motorola V191 (I believe they sell it for $77) for international travel. It's basic, but it holds a signal better than most phones I've used. One good thing about the site is that the phones they sell come with the international charger and an adapter (for use here). They are located in NYC. I happen to live in NYC and have visited the store, but you can just order the phone you want online (or over the phone). I hope that helps.
