First of all, I want to say hello all, and hope everyone is having a good time this Holiday thus far.

I will be travelling to Germany at the beggining of January, and will be there until the end of June. I currently live in the United States, and have a contract with AT&T, and my current phone is the iPhone 3g.

Basically, I am trying to figure out what is the best way for me to be prepared and have a phone ready by time I arrive in Germany here in the next few weeks.

I've read that the best route would be using a prepaid phone, and paying for the minutes as I use them. I would like to know if there is a way there I can pre-order a phone, and have it sent to my house along with a SIM card.. or how I can have all of this activated and ready to go before I leave.

As mentioned, I do have the iPhone, and am not quite sure how wise it would be to bring it alot with me, as I am guessing data charges would cost me a decent amount each month.

Can anyone help me out with some suggestions as to where I should start? I will be leaving in about 2 1/2 weeks, so I am trying to figure out how is the best way to be prepared and have a cell phone upon my arrival.

I really appreciate the help, and hope everyone has a great holiday.

what you need is a quad or triband unlock cellphone and leave your iPhone i don't think it's gonna work there. check ebay for this type of phone. (example nokia E series, N series, nokia 6085, 6086) this are the basic quad band but make sure the one you getting is unlocked.
about the sim card try to search ebay gemany or do some google search.
here are the list of the service provider in germany.
    E-PLUS MOBILFUNK
    T-MOBILE DEUTSCHLAND
    TELEFONICA O2 GERMANY
    VADAFONE D2
try to seach any of this and just add simcard at the end. (example T-MOBILE DEUTSCHLAND SIMCARD) and im sure there some site is selling any of this simcard.
i hope this will help you.
have a nice trip and take care.

    1. Google iPhone international roaming so that you know how expensive it is to even turn your iPhone on overseas.

    2. Check prepaidgsm.net. Sign up for the forums ask your questions about service in Germany. The National Operator page for Germany will give you some infomation on prepaid offerings.

    4. Check ebay and Overstock.com for unlocked quad band cell phones.
    5. Pick up a locked T-mobile quad band pone and a T-Mobile US SIM card off of ebay.
Activate the SIm card put $10 on the card either wait 90 days and ask T-Mobile to unlock your phone or call CS are tell you're leaving the country suddenly and you need the phone unlocked..

    6. Go to :.t-mobileDOT.de/prepaid-handys/0,16847,52-_,00.html]Prepaid Handys | T-Mobile
Figure out which phone might meet you needs from the the Prepaid Handys page at T-Mobile to know what to buy on arrival.

    7. Good Luck! Safe Trip! If in Munich stop by thr Hofbrauhaus and have a brew.
