Motorola released 3 new Droid smart phones in July 2013 in a hope to recapture a sizeable chunk of the cell phone market. While these smart phones, the Motorola Droid MAXX, Motorola Droid Ultra and Motorola Droid Mini, did manage to make a good first impression, they haven’t really caught on like some more famous smart phones (Samsung Galaxy S4, Apple iPhone 5, etc.) In this article I am going to be comparing the Motorola Droid Mini with the HTC One Mini. I had earlier compared it with the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini and the Motorola Droid Mini lost that comparison by 3 points to 1. Will it do better this time? Read on to find out...

    Size and weight

It can be a little difficult to pick a winner between both these smart phones when it comes to size and weight. While the HTC One Mini measures 132 x 63.2 x 9.25 mm the Droid Mini measures 121.25 x 61.3 x 8.9 mm. So, the Droid Mini is a more compact smart phone which is easier to hold. But, the HTC One Mini weighs just 122 g while the Droid Mini weighs 130 g. So, the HTC One Mini is lighter.

It must be easy to understand why it’s difficult to choose a winner for this point. One smart phone is lighter and the other is more compact. Therefore, this point is a draw.

    Display

Moving on to the display, both smart phones really have very little between them. Both come with 4.3” touch screens and while the Droid Mini comes with an LCD screen, the HTC One Mini comes with a Super LCD 2 screen. Both smart phones have the same maximum resolution as well at 1,280 x 720. In terms of pixel density, the Droid Mini has 342 ppi and the HTC One Mini has 341 ppi. Not a significant difference here either. So, the only notable difference between both smart phones is in the display technology. The Super LCD 2 technology on the HTC One Mini means your display will consume less power and outdoor visibility will be significantly improved.

In my opinion, that is enough to award this point to the HTC One Mini.

    Memory & Storage

This point is a lot clearer in terms of which is the better smart phone although again, there isn’t much difference between the two. Both smart phones come with 16 GB of internal storage and no expandable storage options. The HTC One Mini comes with 1 GB of RAM while the Droid Mini comes with 2 GB of RAM.

Considering the fact that the Droid Mini comes with double the RAM the HTC One Mini has, this point definitely has to go to the Droid Mini.

    Camera

The Droid Mini is far ahead when it comes to photography capabilities of both these smart phones. The HTC One Mini comes with a 4 MP camera on the back while the Droid Mini comes with a 10 MP camera. Both smart phones have an LED flash. The HTC One Mini has a 1.6 MP camera on the front while the Droid Mini has a 2 MP camera on the front. Both smart phones offer video recording at 1080p as well.

I won’t waste too much time on this point. The Droid Mini is the clear winner for having a significantly higher megapixel count.

(HTC One Mini - One / Motorola Droid Mini - Two)

    OS & Performance

Both these smart phones run on the Android 4.2.2 (JellyBean) operating system and the HTC One Mini does get an additional benefit from the ‘Sense’ user interface used in all HTC smart phone, although it doesn’t help that much. The HTC One Mini comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chip and a dual core, 1400 MHz, Krait processor while the Droid Mini comes with a Motorola X8 chip and a dual core, 1700 MHz processor. In terms of graphics processor, the HTC One Mini comes with the Adreno 305 processor while the Droid Mini comes with a 400 MHz, quad core processor.

On the whole, the Droid Mini performs a lot better than the HTC One Mini and that is why it will pick up this point.

(HTC One Mini - One / Motorola Droid Mini - Three)

    Battery

This is another point where the HTC One Mini has benefited because of its superior display technology. The HTC One Mini comes with an 1,800 mAh battery while the Droid Mini comes with the larger 2,000 mAh battery. But in terms of standby time, the Droid Mini offers just 13 days while the HTC One Mini offers almost 21 days. That is almost a whole extra week.

This point clearly goes to the HTC One Mini.

    Price

While the HTC One Mini can be picked up for around $ 475 (free of contract) you will have to pay around $ 500 (free of contract) for the Droid Mini. Now $ 25 isn’t too much but if you ask me, considering both these smart phones are supposed to be ‘Mini’ versions of their respective manufacturers flag ship smart phones, I think $ 25 is a lot. And since this is a comparison of the prices of both smart phones, the point should go to the cheaper smart phone.

The point goes to the HTC One Mini.

    Conclusion

So, the final score is 3 points each. It’s a tie. But if you think both smart phones are exactly the same, you couldn’t be more wrong. While the HTC One Mini has a better display, better battery and is cheaper, the Motorola Droid Mini is faster, performs better and has a much better camera. I guess it all boils down to what you are looking to use your ‘Mini’ for. If you are constantly clicking photographs, the Motorola Droid Mini will suit you while the HTC One Mini is better for people that need a long battery life because they’re always on the move. Which one would you go for?
