WARNING! When you master reset your phone, all personal data stored on the phones internal memory will be deleted. This includes media files and ringtones, downloaded content, contacts, apps etc. Furthermore, all settings will be restored to factory values, however, data stored on the SD and SIM cards will not be affected.
NOTE: Before you factory reset your device, you can visit this thread for instructions on how to back up data, and this thread for a guide on how to restore data.
Factory Reset via Settings:
- Open the apps drawer
- Go to Settings
- Scroll to Personal and tap Backup & reset
- Enable or disable Automatic Restore and Back up my data
- Tap Reset phone
- In case your device is protected by a lock screen, enter your PIN / password / pattern to proceed
- Optionally, you can select to Erase SD Card too. WARNING! If you enable this option, all data on the SD card will be deleted throughout the factory reset process
- Tap OK to confirm
Factory Reset via Recovery:
NOTE: In case your phone crashes, freezes, or otherwise prevents you from resetting it via Settings, alternatively you can reset the phone from the Android System Recovery menu which can be accessed by performing a combination of button presses.
- Make sure the phone is powered off
- Next, press and hold Power and Volume down at the same time
- Once the phone vibrates, release Power
- Once you gain access to the hTC download menu, release Volume down
- In the download menu, press Volume down repeatedly to navigate to and highlight reboot to bootloader
- Press Power to select the highlighted option
- Press Volume down to highlight Boot to Recovery mode
- Press Power to confirm
- Once you gain access to the screen showing an HTC Logo and No Command, press and hold Power, then tap (and release) Volume down
- Once in the Android Recovery menu, release Power
- From the menu, press the volume keys to navigate to and highlight wipe data / factory reset
- Press Power to confirm
- Next, highlight Yes delete all user data and press Power to confirm
- Once the master reset is complete, highlight Reboot system now and press Power
Check for OS Updates:
NOTE: After you have factory reset your phone, its recommended to check if new OS updates are available for download. To do this:
- Open the apps drawer
- Go to Settings
- Scroll to and tap About
- Tap Software information and check if a new update is available
- Assuming that new updates are available, follow the on-screen prompts to download and apply them. NOTE: The update process will require at least one reboot. Save any unsaved work before proceeding
