LG L1200 Problem

My friend just gave me his unlocked congular LG L1200 phone. I've placed my T-Mobile sim card into the phone and it seems to be functioning properly. When I close the flip however, I slowly loose reception and I can see the bars dwindle down to none in less than 20 seconds. Is there a way I can correct this? It's fine when its flipped open. Thanks, any help is appreciated
