I just bought the LG VX8300 and have a ton of music files stored on my home PC. I want the cheapest way to get some of these files to my phone (complete songs, not just ringtone clips), so I can use it like an iPod. My thought is to buy an SD card and copy the files directly from my home PC to an SD card, and then sticking it into the SD slot on the phone. Will this work, and do I still need to buy the Music Essentials package to play the files?

Can you listen to music on your phone right now? If so then no other software needed likely.
My LG Fusic LX550 is an mp3 player also and came with a usb cable and I just plug that in go to tools and enable usb and I can save files from my computer onto the 1 gig micro sd card and listen to them no problem.

Re: Do I need to buy the Music Essentials Package to play music files?

I don't have any complete music files on my LG VX8300 yet, but it does play some home-made ringtones that I made myself (I'll explain below, in case anyone else is interested). Also, the LG VX8300 does not come with a USB cable "in-the-box" (unfortunately) -- it's one of the items that comes with the optional Music Essentials Kit that I didn't buy. However, my home PC has an 8-in-1 digital media reader, so I plan to use a microSD (Transflash) card that I just ordered for about $25 including the adapter to fit my PC slot. By purchasing the card instead of the USB cable, I gain the advantage of additional memory for the phone (which I wanted anyway, due to the phone's limited standard memory).

About the ringtones: I made them on my home PC using Audacity software (see Audacity website for the freeware). After creating the ringtones -- my personal favorite is the Iron Man intro by Black Sabbath -- I saved them on my PC as mp3 files, then uploaded them to Verizon's PIX Place website and sent them to my phone. According to the PIX Place website, no messaging fees apply when sending messages via this website. You must limit the bitrate of the files when creating them (which you can do with Audacity), but I don't think quality is affected noticeably. Then I changed the phone settings on my LG VX8300 to enable mp3 and saved the files to My Sounds when I received the file messages.

I assume since the VX8300 plays my "home-made" mp3 ringtones just fine, it will also play complete mp3 music files once I transfer them to the microSD card when it arrives.

I hate to be the bearer of bad news but you have to buy the ME Package from Verizon in order to listen to your mp3's on your phone. I know this for I had a Moto E815 which I had purchased the additional memory for it so I may listen to my mp3s. Over the weekend I purchased the LG Chocolate since my E815 was causing problems and this phone's MP3 player made the E815 look like a caveman. Since I had the memory and music already loaded on the card, I blew off the kit. However I couldn't understand why if the phone recognizes mp3, why wasn't it recognizing the music on the card. So I did some research. It seams that Verizon has locked several features on the phone (which is no surprise, I found this quite annoying with my e815 as well) and evidently unless you shell out another $30 you won't be able to load your mp3's on your phone. I went ahead and ordered the package online since I didn't want to go back to the store and hopefully before the end of the week I'll have mine working.

    verysinful,

Actually, I didn't purchase the Music Essentials Kit and my LG VX8300 is playing mp3's just fine. As I said before, I had to unlock the phone settings with the undocumented command Verizon doesn't tell you about. I assume you've already tried that with your Chocolate? The microSD (Transflash) card I ordered arrived a few days ago. I loaded it with mp3's from my home computer, put it in the phone, and it plays them without any problem. Mind you, the sound quality probably is not as good as an iPod, but it's not bad, and sufficient to pass the time while waiting for a flight or something. I had a little trouble, at first, finding the songs on the menu after inserting the card -- until I realized I was looking under "My Music" when, in fact, they were further down (off the screen) in "My MP3's." Let me know how things go with your Chocolate.

Actually I haven't tried it yet......... I found this forum this morning and after reading some of the tricks, I figure I'll try a few this week. Hopefully I won't crash my phone.

All you have to do is load mp3's on a memory card and throw the memory card into the phone (not literally). Close the phone, hold down the play button, and it will load up the songs on the memory card. I did have one 8300 that wouldn't play vocals through the stereo headsets unless the equalizer was set to 3D surround with this method, but I'd be surprised if you had any problems.

An iPod doesn't have anything to do with sound quality. It's more dependent on the quality of the mp3 itself. More compression = worse sound quality. If a cell phone has a stereo output, you wouldn't notice any difference between the cell phone and an iPod...except for a difference in equalizer settings.

    Spum,
I wasn't aware of that. Can you explain the technical side of it? The reason I ask is because I was in BestBuy last night checking iPod's and the sound quality was so obviously better than my phone -- so if what you're saying is true, then it must be my headphones. (I'm aware of compression and all my files are pretty high quality, 128 kbs or better). Do you mean to say if I buy a pair of high quality headphones, I can be getting the same exact potential sound quality that I would from an iPod? That would be cool.

Re: Do I need to buy the Music Essentials Package to play music files?

Yeah, maybe. It depends on how it's hooked up to the phone and what kind of phone it is also. The 8300 puts out stereo sound so the sound quality should be just as good...you might also try messing with the equalizer. The best sound (IMO) come from the 3D surround sound equalizer setting. On the other hand, if you have an adapter hooked up to the phone which your headphones plug into, that might be decreasing the sound quality depending on what kind of adapter it is. There are a couple of factors, but there's no reason you'd be getting better sound from an iPod than your phone...with the exception of the equalizer.

    Just an update...

I bought an adapter from Verizon that converts standard 3.5mm headphones to the 2.5mm jack of the VX 8300. Now I can use any headphones to hear the music. The cost was $15 from the Verizon website and included the built-in answer end too.

Is there anyway you could post what the undocumented command is? If not would you mind letting me know where I need to go to find it. I just purchased this phone and I am interested in doing this. Thanks in advance for your help.
