The LG G2 is currently enjoying the spot of the most advanced smart phone on the market. But, Samsung isn’t going to let them stay on top for too long. The Samsung Galaxy Note III has been talked about for quite a while now and it is indeed one of the most looked forward to smart phone/phablet of 2013. But for now, I am going to be talking about an older Samsung phablet, the Samsung Galaxy Note II. How much has LG really improved? Keep in mind that both these phablets were released more than a year apart. So, what are the improvements? Read on to find out...

Size and weight

The Galaxy Note II does have a slightly larger display. That being said, it measures 151 x 80.5 x 9.4 mm which is quite amazing for a 1 year old phablet. On the other hand, the LG G2 measures 138.5 x 70.9 x 8.9 mm. LG have indeed improved on the size aspect and you now get more features in a smaller size. Even in terms of weight, the LG G2 has made improvements and the phablet weighs just 143 g to the 182 g of the Galaxy Note II. There isn’t too much you can do with the size and weight of a phablet and manufacturers are constantly working on making smaller phablets with larger screens.
I think LG have made sufficient improvements to be awarded this point.

Display

The Galaxy Note II comes with a 5.5” Super AMOLED touch screen with a maximum resolution of 1,280 x 720 pixels. It also has a pixel density of 265 ppi and a light and proximity sensor. The LG G2 comes with a 5.2” IPS LCD touch screen with a maximum resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels and a pixel density of 423 ppi. And apart from the features of the Galaxy Note II it also has scratch resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 3. The level of advancement here is quite clear. In fact, I’m impressed. Having a pixel density of 423 ppi on such a large screen surely wouldn’t have been easy.

This point goes to LG as well.

Memory & Storage

This is one point where I’m sure LG could have done a lot more. The Galaxy Note II comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16, 32 or 64 GB of internal storage while the LG G2 comes with 2 GB of RAM and 16 or 32 GB of internal storage. But, while the Galaxy Note II allows storage expansion up to 64 GB the LG G2 has no expandable storage options. That is a major “no-no” today. I’m sure LG could have a lot more on this point. Yes, the RAM is now LPDDR3 but that definitely isn’t enough.
Believe it or not, the point goes to the Galaxy Note II.

Camera

The LG G2 comes with a 13 MP camera while the Galaxy Note II comes with an 8 MP camera. Both phablets come with an LED flash. As far as the front camera is concerned, the Galaxy Note II has a 1.9 MP camera while the LG G2 has a 2.1 MP camera. That’s a mild improvement. But, the LG G2 allows full HD video recording at 60 fps which is quite amazing. That is a significant improvement over the regular 30 fps full HD recording on the Galaxy Note II. It also has optical image stabilization which means the pictures on the LG G2 will be a lot better than the Galaxy Note II.

LG has done more than enough with the camera on their phablet and definitely deserve this point.

OS & Performance

As far as operating systems go, the LG G2 runs on Android 4.2.2 (JellyBean) while the Galaxy Note II runs on Android 4.1.2 (JellyBean). That’s an understandable improvement and I don’t want to award any points to the LG G2 just for its improved operating system. But performance wise the LG G2 is much more superior as well. It comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 chip and quad core, 2260 MHz, Krait 400 processor and Adreno 330 graphics while the Galaxy Note II comes with a Samsung Exynos 4 (4412) chip, quad core, 1600 MHz, ARM Cortex-A9 processor and ARM Mali-MP4 graphics. The easiest way to understand the difference between both these phablets is to use the LG G2 and the Galaxy Note II. I think the performance difference will be evident.

This point goes to the LG G2.

Battery

Whether you like the Galaxy Note II or not, you have to admit, it has an amazing battery. It comes with a 3,100 mAh battery which boasts of a standby time of 37 days on 3G. That is crazy. Now, the LG G2 comes with a 3,000 mAh battery which should have a pretty decent standby time as well. I highly doubt it will be anywhere near the Galaxy Note II since its display consumes a lot more power.

But still, there isn’t any official news on the LG G2 and I’m sure LG will, at best, be able to draw this point.

Price

While you can pick up the 16 GB Galaxy Note II for around $ 520- $ 530, you will have to spend around $ 600 for the 16 GB LG G2. But, the LG G2 certainly provides significant improvements which are well worth the additional $70 - $80. But, the Galaxy Note II offers just as much for its price.

I’m going to call this point a draw.

Conclusion

So, the LG G2 is clearly the better phablet, with 4 points but what’s more interesting is that the Samsung Galaxy Note II managed to tie a couple of points and even won 1 of them. Okay, this was LG’s first phablet contending for the top spot and you have to give them credit for it. But, given the fact that there’s a year’s difference between both phablets, I’m sure they could have done a lot more.
