Motorola’s latest smart phone the Moto X hasn’t really taken the market by storm. But that doesn’t mean it isn’t a pretty decent smart phone. The LG G2 has blown everyone away with its technology. That being said, I don’t think Motorola invested too much into the Moto X. It must have been like a trial run in the top end smart phone market maybe? Here, I am going to be comparing it with another smart phone that didn’t get a chance to prove its worth, the Nokia Lumia 928. Shortly after the release of the Lumia 928, the Nokia Lumia 1020 came out with its amazing 41 MP camera. But the fact still remains that the Lumia 928 is a pretty good smart phone. Which one will come out on top? Read on to find out...

    Size and weight

This has never been Nokia’s strong suit and when a company like Motorola can do a better job I really wonder how Nokia’s think tank works. I mean, I’m sure they can manufacture smart phones that are as thin and as light as any, so why don’t they? Anyway, the Lumia 928 measures 133 x 68.9 x 10.1 mm while the Moto X measures 129.3 x 65.3 x 10.4 mm. Even though the Lumia 928 is slightly thinner you have to account for the fact that the Moto X has a larger display. Also, the Lumia 928 is a lot heavier at 162 g as compared to the Moto X which weighs just 130 g.

When you put all this together, the obvious winner of this point is the Moto X.

    Display

Nokia does have some really nice displays on some of its smart phones from the Lumia series and the Lumia 928 doesn’t disappoint either. It comes with a 4.5” AMOLED touch screen and has a pixel density of 332 ppi. The Moto X comes with a 4.7” AMOLED touch screen and has a pixel density of 316 ppi. Motorola did a pretty decent job right? So while the Moto X screen is slightly bigger, the Lumia 928 has a few more pixels per inch.

The only fair decision here is to call it a draw.

    Memory & Storage

The Moto X comes with 2 GB of RAM which is quite amazing considering the fact that the Lumia 928 has just 1 GB of RAM. Not bad for Motorola is it? In terms of storage the Moto X comes with either 16 or 32 GB of internal storage while the Lumia 928 comes with 32 GB of internal storage. Neither smart phone offers expandable storage and both Nokia and Motorola need to start working on it immediately if they want to compete with the likes of Samsung.

This point will have to be awarded to the Moto X for the faster RAM although it did win it by just a whisker.

    (Motorola Moto X - Two / Nokia Lumia 928 - Zero)

    Camera

This is Nokia’s bread and butter. Nokia have never looked back ever since they came out with a 12.1 MP camera on the Nokia N8 way back in April 2010. The Lumia 928 comes with an 8.7 MP camera and Xenon as well LED flash. The Moto X comes with a 10 MP camera and LED flash. While the Moto X does have a higher mega pixel count, I’m you would agree that the Lumia 928 is the better camera simply because of its flash. The Lumia 928 also comes with optical image stabilization which is quite extraordinary indeed.

This point definitely goes to Nokia.

    OS & Performance

Motorola are now tied up with Google and there were no surprises when the Moto X was released with the latest Android operating system 4.2.2 (JellyBean). On the other hand, the Lumia 928 runs on Microsoft’s latest operating system, Windows Phone 8. Comparing both operating systems is a whole different argument. I’ll save you the trouble and call it a draw. But the story is quite different when it comes to the technology in both smart phones. The Moto X comes with a Dual core, 1700 MHz, Krait processor and Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro MSM8960 (Motorola X) chip whereas the Lumia 928 comes with a Dual core, 1500 MHz, Krait processor and Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 chip. You can easily notice the difference in both smart phones. Even the graphics processor on the Moto X is much better than the Lumia 928. It has an Adreno 320 processor as compared to the Adreno 225 processor on the Lumia 928.

There is only one winner here and that is the Moto X.

    (Motorola Moto X - Three / Nokia Lumia 928 - One)

    Battery

The Moto X has a larger battery than the Lumia 928. It comes with a 2,200 mAh battery as compared to the 2,000 mAh battery on the Lumia 928. Unfortunately, bigger isn’t always better. The Moto X offers a measly standby time of just 10 days while the Lumia 928 boasts of a standby time of 25 days. That is a huge difference. Definitely something worth noticing.

This point clearly goes to the Lumia 928.

    (Motorola Moto X - Three / Nokia Lumia 928 - Two)

    Price

And finally the price. The Lumia 928 can be purchased (free of contract) for $ 540 which is quite decent considering all the features the smart phone offers. But the 32 GB version of the Moto X is priced a bit too high at $ 620 which is quite steep for a smart phone with, at best, mid level technology. If you really have to compare both these smart phones in terms of value for money I would have to say that the Lumia 928 is far ahead of the Moto X.

    The point goes to Nokia.

    (Motorola Moto X - Three / Nokia Lumia 928 - Three)

    Conclusion

So both smart phones are tied are 3 points each. While the Motorola Moto X might have better technology in it and may even be more compact, it definitely isn’t the better smart phone among the two. I have heard many complaints that the Motorola Moto X has a plastic feel to it and that its bootloader is locked. So you lose out on the freedom that usually comes with Android devices. If I had to pick, I would go for the Nokia Lumia 928 (not because I’m a fan) just because of the Xenon flash. Trust me, it’s worth it.
