I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again. When the Apple iPhone 5 was released almost a year ago, it was one of the best smart phones in the market. But today, it finds itself sorely lacking the features required to stay on top. Apple will most probably release a couple of new smart phones before this year is over but for now I must say that they have really lost out to other Android devices. Here I will be comparing Apple’s flagship smart phone with one of Motorola’s latest releases, the Moto X. Who do you think will come out on top?

Size and weight

If there’s one thing Apple’s smart phones are known for, it’s for being very small and light even though they aren’t as durable as you would like a smart phone to be. The iPhone 5 measures 123.8 x 58.6 x 7.6 mm and weighs just 112 g which is quite remarkable even today. On the other hand, the Moto X measures 129.3 x 65.3 x 10.4 mm and weighs 130 g. Now, while the Moto X may not look like it stands a chance here, you have to give them credit for having a much larger display and battery. These features would surely increase the size and weight of any smart phone.

I will call this point a draw, since both smart phones make best use of their respective sizes and weights.

Display

As far as display is concerned, even though the Moto X was released only recently, its technology isn’t that up to date. The Moto X comes with a 4.7” AMOLED touch screen while the iPhone 5 comes with a 4.0” IPS LCD touch screen. Yes, the Moto X has a larger screen but the iPhone 5 has much better technology and this is evident when we compare the pixel density in both smart phones. The iPhone 5 has 326 ppi while the Moto X has 316 ppi. Yes, it isn’t too much of a difference, but considering the fact that the iPhone 5 was released almost a year ago, I think I need to give credit where it is due.

Then again, I can’t award this point to Apple simply because it is almost a year old, can I? This one is a draw as well.

Memory & Storage

Now, when you compare the memory and storage capabilities of two smart phones that were released so far apart, you would think the newer smart phone trumps the older one. But that isn’t the case here. Even though the iPhone 5 comes with a 1 GB of RAM as opposed to the 2 GB of RAM on the Moto X, the RAM on the iPhone 5 has a remarkable clocking speed of 1066 MHz while the Moto X has a clocking speed of 500 MHz. If you ask me, what the iPhone 5 lacks in gigabytes it definitely makes up for in speed. And as far as storage is concerned, both smart phones lack expandable memory options which means you have to be happy with the smart phones internal storage. The Moto X comes with either 16 or 32 GB of internal memory while the iPhone 5 comes with 16, 32 or 64 GB of internal memory.

It would be unfair if I were to award this point to either smart phone. Therefore, this is our third draw.

Camera

Now this point definitely won’t be a draw. The Moto X comes with a 10 MP camera on the back while the iPhone 5 comes with an 8 MP camera. And while the iPhone 5 has a 1.2 MP front facing camera the Moto X has a 2 MP front camera. Both smart phones come with an LED flash on the back. But what essentially sets both these smart phones apart is the fact that the Moto X allows Full HD video recording at 60 fps while the iPhone 5 allows Full HD video recording at 30 fps.

Like I said, the first point of this comparison goes to the Moto X.

OS & Performance

The iPhone 5 runs on Apple iOS 6.1 operating system while the Moto X runs on Android’s latest operating system 4.2.2. (JellyBean). The iPhone 5 comes with the Apple A6 chip and a dual core, 1300 MHz, Apple Swift processor while the Moto X comes with a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro MSM8960 (Motorola X8) and a dual core, 1700 MHz, Krait processor. For graphics, the iPhone 5 comes with a PowerVR SGX543MP3 processor while the Moto X comes with an Adreno 320 processor. If I had to choose the better performer between both these smart phones I would have to go with the Moto X but only by a whisker.

The point goes to the Moto X.

Battery

Now the iPhone 5 doesn’t really have a great battery or have a long battery life but you will be amazed at how bad the Moto X, with its big battery, is. The iPhone 5 comes with a 1,440 mAh battery which offers a standby time of 9.4 days while the Moto X comes with a 2,200 mAh battery that offers a standby time of just 10 days.

Given these facts, it is only fair that the iPhone 5 gets this point since it manages to provide almost the same amount of standby time with a significantly smaller battery.

Price

As far as the pricing is concerned, there were rumors that the Moto X was going to be launched for around $ 700 but Motorola has surprised us all by attaching a price tag of $ 580 (free of contract) I have to say the Moto X is now suddenly worth it. On the other hand, you can pick up the iPhone 5 for around $ 650. While I’m sure many Apple aficionados won’t mind paying the extra $ 70 for the iPhone 5, if it were up to me I would have to say that the Moto X does provide a lot more value for money.

The point goes to the Moto X.

(Motorola Moto X - Three / Apple iPhone 5 - One)

Conclusion

Like I said before, this comparison is between two smart phones which were released almost a year apart. But still, considering the iPhone 5 is still Apple’s flagship smart phone I think it’s only fair to say that they need to start releasing more than one smart phone a year. But for now, the Apple iPhone 5 loses to the Motorola Moto X by 3 points to 1 and that’s all that matters.
