When Motorola announced the Moto X in August 2013, it was supposed to be the smart phone which made them relevant again. Unfortunately, they couldn’t quite achieve what they wanted with this smart phone. Another similar smart phone is the Blackberry Z10 which was released in January 2013. While both these smart phones failed to make a noteworthy impression on the smart phone community, today I am going to try and find out which of the two is better. Which smart phone will come out on top? Read on to find out...

Size and weight

In terms of size, both these smart phone manufacturers seem to have got some things right and some things wrong. The Moto X measures 129.3 x 65.3 x 10.4 mm while the Z10 measures 130 x 65.6 x 9 mm. Now, consider the fact that the Moto X has a much larger display and you will find the length and breadth of the smart phone to be quite exceptional. But in terms of thickness, the Z10 is more than a millimeter thinner. Both smart phones are quite similar in terms of weight with the Moto X weighing 130 g and the Z10 weighing 138 g.

It’s a tough point to award but I’m going to go with the Moto X. Even though it’s thicker, it’s smaller and lighter with a larger display as well. That’s worth the point in my books.

Display

You might think both these smart phones are similar here but you couldn’t be more wrong. The Moto X has a 4.7” AMOLED touch screen while the Z10 has a 4.2” Multi touch screen with “touch on lens” technology. “Touch on lens” is a technology that makes a smart phone lighter and reduces reflectivity as well. The only drawback is, if the screen so much as gets a small crack, you’re done for. Then again, it allows the Z10 to have a pixel density of 356 ppi while the Moto X has a pixel density of 316 ppi. I must say, the Z10 has impressed with this new technology on their touch screen although I highly doubt it will be used by more manufacturers unless someone can figure out how to protect functionality in case the screen cracks.

I will award this point to the Z10 only for its “Touch on lens” technology.

Memory & Storage

Both smart phones come with 2 GB of RAM and a maximum clocking speed of 500 MHz. This means that you can expect both smart phones to operate quite fast. But the picture isn’t as bright for one of the smart phones when it comes to storage. The Z10 comes with 16 GB of internal storage and allows memory expansion up to 64 GB. But, the Moto X comes with either 16 or 32 GB of internal storage and has no expandable storage options.

I have no choice but to award this point to the Z10 just because it allows expandable storage.

Camera

The Moto X has quite a handy little camera on the back, but the Z10 isn’t far behind. While the Moto X has a 10 MP rear camera and LED flash, the Z10 has an 8 MP rear camera and LED flash. Both smart phones allow you to record videos in 1080p Full HD but the Moto X has an amazing frame rate of 60 fps. But the Z10 has digital image stabilization.

I’m going to call this one a draw as both smart phones have pretty decent cameras each with their own advantages.

OS & Performance

The Moto X runs on Android 4.2.2 (JellyBean) while the Z10 runs on the Blackberry (10) operating system. I wouldn’t want to discuss the difference between the operating systems here as both will have their own group of supporters. While the Moto X runs on their own version of the Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro MSM8960 chip, the Motorola X8, the Z10 runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 chip. Both smart phones are quite similar in terms of processors with the Moto X having a dual core, 1700 MHz, Krait processor and the Z10 having a dual core, 1500 MHz, Krait processor. But the Moto X has a far superior graphics processor, the Adreno 330 as compared to the Adreno 225 on the Z10.

In terms of technology and performance, you can expect the Moto X to perform a lot better than the Z10 and that’s why it gets this point.

Battery

The Moto X comes with a 2,200 mAh battery while the Z10 comes with a 1,800 mAh battery. But in terms of battery performance, both smart phones are quite bad. The Moto X has a standby time of just 10 days while the Z10 has a standby time of 13 days. Both these figures are quite low by today’s standards.

But, I will award this point to the Z10 for managing to have a higher standby time with a smaller battery.

Price

The Moto X can be purchased for around $ 580 (free of contract) while you will have to pay around $ 615 (free of contract) for the Z10. The Z10 is leading this comparison by 3 points to 2 at this stage and I feel that it would only be right to not only award this point to the cheaper smart phone, but also to the smart phone that provides sufficient value for money.

The Moto X gets the point.

Conclusion

So the final score is 3 points each. The Z10 has a better display, expandable storage and a longer lasting battery while the Moto X is more compact, performs better and is cheaper. If you had to choose between both these smart phones, I guess you will have to make your choice based on what you most want from your smart phone.
