WARNING! Master resetting your Lumia 640 will result in the deletion of all personal data stored on the phone’s internal memory, and all settings will be restored to factory values.

NOTE: To learn how you can back up and restore your data before commencing the master reset, follow this link for a full guide. Also keep in mind that content on the SD and SIM cards will not be affected by the factory reset.

Master Reset from the Settings Menu:

  1. From the Start screen, slide left
  2. Go to “Settings”
  3. Swipe down and tap “about’
  4. Tap “reset your phone”
  5. At the warning message, read the information and tap “yes”
  6. Tap “yes” again to confirm and proceed with the reset

Master Reset via Hardware Keys:

NOTE: If you are unable to reset your phone by following the method above, then you can try applying the factory reset from the recovery menu, by performing a combination of hardware key presses.

  1. Turn off the Lumia 640
  2. With the device powered down, press and hold “Volume Down”
  3. Press the “Power” button to turn on the phone. Once the phone vibrates, release the “Power” button but continue pressing “Volume Down”
  4. Once the exclamation mark appears on the screen, release “Volume Down” too
  5. From the menu, perform the following button press combination (Keep in mind that nothing will change on the screen while you enter the following sequence):
    1. Press “Volume Up”
    2. Press “Volume Down”
    3. Press “Power”
    4. Press “Volume Down”
  6. Your phone should now automatically reset. During this time you should see two gears rotating on the screen for about 5 minutes

Check for Software Updates:

NOTE: After master resetting your phone it’s recommended that you check if any software updates are available for download. To do so:

  1. Swipe the Start screen left and go to “applications”
  2. Tap “Settings” > “About”
  3. Tap “More info”
  4. You can check the “Firmware version number” and see if a newer software update is available. If it is, follow the on-screen prompts to download and apply it
