When your service provider sell you the phone in a discount price, besides asking you to sign a 1 year or longer plan agreement, they also locked the phone so that it will only accept SIM cards from the same provider but not others. Unlocking is a way to override the locking. Mind you unlocking your phone will probably void the warranty.

Unlocking is also a greast advantage for you. It allows you to put in a different sim card, meaning you can pick the service provider you want. Also, unlocking a phone also increases its value, if and when you sell it. If you want yours unlocked, e-mail me as I know how.
