I am a real newbie when it comes to cell phones, I basically have never owned one, however I was recently on a trip in Dubai and decided to splurge and get a nokia 95 - 8gb, mainly for travelling and taking photos. Now I am back home, living in the USA, and am thinking about activating my phone. It has no SIM card or anything, and I plan on using it mainly for emergency/safety situations. I would also like to use it to access the web.

It seems like when I try to contact popular carriers they offer plans that make you have to use their phones, so my primary question is how do I get service without having to use the carriers phone? My second question is, does anyone know of a carrier who only offers internet (3g) access?

If so I could maybe pay less and then use a skype account of something to make calls through the internet for free. My guess is that internet access is one of the things that makes phone services so expensive, so I am doubtful there's a good answer to this but I thought I throw it there since I really don't know much about the cell phone world. Hard to believe I still don't have one, I know!

    any help or pointers welcome,
    thank you!

You can use it on either T-Mobile or AT&T. That said, there are two versions of the N95: the American and the Euro-Asian version. Considering that you bought it in Dubai, you most likely have the Euro-Asian version and that means no 3G in the U.S. If you have/had the American version, then it would work on AT&T's 3G. Otherwise, it's strictly a 2G/EDGE devices in the states. It does have Wi-Fi, though, so it's not a total loss.

As to your question about providers, T-Mobile and AT&T both allow you to get service (no-contract) if you bring your own device. You just need to get a knowledgeable or willing rep. I have heard conflicting stories on this part, but they either do or do not earn commission if they activate it without a contract. And for this reason, most reps play ignorant to idea. I have, however, activated service with both AT&T and T-Mobile without a contract. I brought my own device and pretty much intimidated the reps with my knowledge of cell phones and their companies' policies.

Most important, though, it's a matter of which provider (AT&T or T-Mobile) offers the better service in your area and the places you wish to travel. Nationally, AT&T is better, but locally that might be a different matter, because every carrier has their strong and weak spots. You might live in an area that is well served by both. If so, go with T-Mobile. They have cheaper plans, especially since 3G won't matter (if you have the Euro-Asian version, that is; otherwise, go with AT&T).

Hey - this is really helpful Aurakles - you're probably right I have the Euro-Asian version, but at least now I know a little more about my options. If and when I move forward and find a solution on this I will post my experience so that others can maybe learn from it...or if I have more questions of course
