In the past at my job, there has been a reluctance to set up Blackberry phones to sync with our Exchange servers and MS Outlook. The feeling was that in order to do it right, it would require a dedicated server. Is this really the case?

I don't think it makes a huge difference unless you are a very large company (1000+ employees) then you would want a dedicated BES.

Blackberries do require a special server. But, your company does not have to buy it. Your service provider will most likely have their own that you can use.
It will pull the mail off your exchange server and push it to the blackberry.
