When you put two smart phones like the Sony Xperia Z and Blackberry Z10 in front of each other, there is very little you can expect. While Sony is best known for other consumer electronics Blackberry is popular only because of its business capabilities. In a way, you could say that both these manufacturers are outside their comfort zones with these smart phones. But if I forget all of this and do an honest comparison between both these smart phones, who do you think will come out on top? Read on to find out...

    Size and weight

Before we compare the size and weight of both these smart phones it is pertinent to mention that the Xperia Z has a significantly larger display than the Z10. That being said, the Xperia Z measures 139 x 71 x 7.9 mm while the Z10 measures 130 x 65.6 x 9 mm. I will ignore the obvious difference between the length and width (on account of the display difference) and focus only on the thickness. The Xperia Z is a lot thinner which makes it easier to hold. But, the Xperia Z is slightly heavier at 146 g than the Z10 at 138 g. But honestly, 8 g doesn’t really make too much of a difference.

This point should go to the Xperia Z because Sony has managed to fit in a much larger screen and camera into a much smaller body.

    Display

Like I mentioned above, the Xperia Z has a much larger display than the Z10. It comes with a 5.0” TFT touch screen while the Z10 comes with just a 4.2” multi touch screen. This means that the Z10 has some really poor screen quality. And it is further supplemented by the fact that the Xperia Z has a pixel density of 443 ppi while the Z10 has a pixel density of just 356 ppi. I mean how can you expect to release a top end smart phone with such a shoddy display and expect to capture a sizeable share of the market?

This point goes to the Xperia Z as well.

    Memory & Storage

The competition is a lot closer between both these smart phones here. Both come with 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of internal storage. The only difference between the two is that the Z10 supports memory expansion up to 64 GB while the Xperia Z supports memory expansion up to 64 GB. But I can’t think of this as anything more than a slight inconvenience for the Xperia Z users.

It’s definitely not enough to award a point to the Z10. Looks like it’s another draw.

    Camera

The 13.1 MP camera on the Xperia Z is quite impressive. And in today’s world where almost every top end smart phone manufacturer is releasing their smart phones with at least 10 MP cameras, the 8 MP camera on the Z10 just doesn’t cut it. Don’t get me wrong, the 8 MP camera on the Z10 is quite satisfactory. It’s just that when you compare it with an incredible camera like the one on the Xperia Z there can only be one winner.

This point clearly goes to the Xperia Z.

    (Sony Xperia Z - Three / Blackberry Z10 - Zero)

    OS & Performance

The Xperia Z runs on the latest Android operating system 4.2.2 JellyBean while the Z10 runs on the latest Blackberry operating system Blackberry 10. Blackberry has made significant improvements in their operating system to make it more user friendly but it still hasn’t reached the top. All it will take is a few tweaks and they should be there though. The Xperia Z runs on a Quad core, 1500 MHz, Krait processor and Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro APQ8064 chip while the Z10 runs on a Dual Core, 1500 MHz, Krait processor and Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Plus MSM8960 chip. So you see, in terms of technology, neither of these smart phones deserve to compete with the best today.

This one is going to be a draw simply because neither smart phone does enough to deserve the point.

    Battery

The Xperia Z comes with a 2,330 mAh battery that provides a stand by time of 22.9 days. That is truly phenomenal. On the other hand, the Z10 comes with a small 1,800 mAh battery than has a standby time of just 13 days. I know, 13 days is a lot but considering all major smart phones today have at least 15 days of standby time I have no choice but to say that the Z10 is below average as far as its batter y is concerned.

This point will be going to the Xperia Z as well and I’m sure I don’t need to explain why.

    (Sony Xperia Z - Four / Blackberry Z10 - Zero)

    Price

Both these smart phones can be purchased free of contract for something between $ 640 and $ 650. Not a very noticeable difference which pretty much means that the price of these smart phones isn’t going to help you decide which one to buy. You will have to compare the various other features of the smart phones in order to determine which one is better.

I have no other option but to call this point a draw.

    (Sony Xperia Z - Four / Blackberry Z10 - Zero)

    Conclusion

At the end of this comparison we have the Sony Xperia Z with 4 points while the Blackberry Z10 hasn’t been able to pick up a single point. What does that tell us about both these smart phones? Well, one thing I have definitely figured out is that Blackberry has a long long way to go before it can establish itself in the smart phone market. If you really had to choose between both these smart phones, you should definitely go with the Sony Xperia Z.
