Ringtone Making 101

So you want to make your own ringtones?
There are different ways of making your own ringtones.
1) Software on your computer
2) Ringtone Creation Websites
Or if you own a PDA there is software that allows you to crop your mp3s right from the handset.


The first option involves computer software. Audacity and Wavepad are great pieces of software for trimming your mp3s into ringtones. If you need to download them just google either one. They support different file formats so you can go from mp3 to m4a, mp3 to wav and so on....
After you have made your file just use an uploader to send your files. Google something like "(Your Carrier) uploader".

The second option involves websites that allow you to make your own ringtones. Websites include Phonezoo, Mobilereelz, Mbuzzy, Myxer.
The difference between using downloaded software and a website is for one you dont have to worry about doing the conversion. The process normally involves uploading your Mp3 file, cutting out the part you want, sending it to your phone. There are some drawbacks to using these services. For one the ringtone quality is not always the best. For example Phonezoo tends to send ringtones in .qcp format which is far inferior in quality compared to mp3, aac/m4a ringtones. Another drawback is that in order to download your ringtones to your handset you need an internet package on your cellphone..or you can expect a hefty phone bill.
Here is an overview on each of the ringtone creation websites:
Phonezoo: Combines social networking and ringtones on one page. Ringtones are typically in the .qcp (poor quality) format that takes up little space on your phone. Requires registration. Offers WAP.
MobileReelz: No registrations. Provides different formats to create your ringtones. Offers WAP to download ringtones straight from your phone, and a locker to download the file to your computer for use with bitpim or bluetooth.
MBuzzy Similar to Phonezoo. Was recently bought out and its "supposed" to stay running the same. The company that bought it out sells ringtones and mobile content. Hidden Content
Myxer Like Phonezoo and Mbuzzy it requires registration and it implements a social network. I could not locate a WAP portal. By default it chooses a ringtone format that is compatible with your phone but you can change it at a later time.

I hope this was informative. I understand the veterans may see this as nothing new but I do see plenty of threads involving ringtone creation so this is for the people that need some guidance.

Not a bad summary - there are a couple of other sites though like mobango.com, zedge.net - I'm a fan of mobango although there's a lot of crap files to wade through.

Audacity is the best software i've found for chopping up mp3s

not knocking your thread, but if you're interested in creating ringtones, I would suggest doing it yourself using either Audacity, Goldwave or another audio editing program. There are many threads out there on how to do this, and you don't have to sign up for a website.

its not just about making the ringtone its getting it on your phone....some phones have bluetooth disabled...meaning even if they make their ringtone they cant get it from their computer to their phone...
Bitpim is an option for some but not all phones...
some phones download with out any problems from wap sites...
some can do it with text and internet...

just because it works for one person doesnt always mean it will work for others....personally I prefer Wavepad over Audacity...but I havent used either one for a couple of months...
not all the websites I mentioned require registration look at MobileReelz...

yeah best bet is make your own - thing is it is still hard to connect a phone to a PC even with bluetooth or a datacable especially for newbies

like I said not knocking, but there are more options to using your own music, cutting the song exactly the way you want it, mono or stereo, how loud you want it, etc...

If you don't have bluetooth, get yourself a data cable. It's much cheaper than paying for a data plan via your carrier.

well we can use data cord to transfer the ringtones beside bluetooth.
You can download any RT and then transfer it ...

But if you want to make customised RT's then its useful

I have always felt a bit weird about those websites that crop an MP3 to ring tone size. Afterall, you have to upload your MP3 to their site (which you paid for), and GIVE it away to them for the privilege of using their online software to cut it down to size.

It's sort of like the queezy feeling I get from Onstar. Thinking that some faceless person 1000 miles away would have the ability to unlock my car at any moment just gives me the willys.

Maybe I'm just being paranoid, but what can I say. I prefer to use software ON my computer, like Audacity.

yeah..that sounds pretty paranoid...maybe you shouldnt be responding to people that are hundreds/thousands of miles away...we are pretty faceless also...j/k but the thing thats weird is that nowadays there are plenty of things that are faceless in our lives...to each his own...
