Size and weight

The Galaxy Note II measures 151 x 80.5 x 9.4 mm while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 measures 167.6 x 88 x 8 mm. While these figures might seem a little too high, you have to remember that both these cell phones come under the “phablet category.” That being said, the Galaxy Note II weighs just 182 g while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 weighs 199 g. So you see, while the Galaxy mega 6.3 has the upper hand as far as the dimensions (it has a much larger display) are concerned the Galaxy Note II is much lighter.

I guess this point should be a draw.

Display

As far as the display is concerned, again both these phablets have their pros and cons. While the Galaxy Mega 6.3 has the larger touch screen at 6.3” the Galaxy Note II has a 5.5” touch screen. But, the Galaxy Note has a pixel density of 265 ppi while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 has a pixel density of 233 ppi. And as far as technology is concerned, the Galaxy Note II uses on Super AMOLED technology while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 uses a Super Clear LCD. Personally, I prefer the AMOLED touch screens simply because they save you a lot of battery.

Neither of these phablets do enough to pick up this point. It’s another draw.

Memory & Storage

The Galaxy Note II runs on 2 GB of RAM and comes with 16 GB of internal memory while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 runs on 1.5 GB of RAM and comes with either 8 or 16 GB of internal memory. Both phablets support storage expansion up to 64 GB and you really can’t notice any difference between both of them as far as the speed is concerned. I’m starting to wonder if Samsung really needed to release this new phablet. It really doesn’t offer much more.

Another draw.

Camera

Both phablets come with 8 MP cameras on the back and 1.9 MP camera on the front. Both phablets also support video recording at 1080p HD. The Galaxy Mega 6.3 has a few more features than the Galaxy Note II but there really isn’t anything in the Galaxy Mega 6.3 that makes you go, “wow!”

The fourth draw in a row.

OS & Performance

The first real signs of difference. While the Galaxy Note II runs on Android 4.1.2 (JellyBean) the Galaxy Mega 6.3 runs on Android’s latest operating system 4.2.2 (JellyBean). This isn’t something that you can hold against the Note II though. Also, the Note II runs on a Samsung Exynos 4412 chip and Quad core, 1600 MHz, ARM Cortex-A9 processor while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 runs on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 chip and Dual Core, 1700 MHz, Krait processor. And the Galaxy Note II comes with an ARM Mali-400 MP4 graphics processor as opposed to the Adreno 305 graphics processor on the Galaxy Mega 6.3.

Quite a significant jump as far as hardware is concerned and finally, the first point goes to the Galaxy Mega 6.3

Battery

This point is definitely going to shock you. While the Galaxy Note II comes with a 3,100 mAh battery the Galaxy Mega 6.3 comes with a 3,200 mAh battery. But the shocking part is that while the Galaxy Mega 6.3 offers a standby time of 17.5 days the Galaxy Note II boasts of a standby time of an unbelievable 37.1 days. I think any phone that offers a standby time of more than 20 days is exceptional but 37.1 days?? That is phenomenal.

This point is definitely going to the Galaxy Note II.

Price

And lastly, the price. While you can pick up the Galaxy Mega 6.3 for something around $ 490 (free of contract), you will have to spend a little more when it comes to the Galaxy Note II which costs $ 546 (free of contract). Of course, I have compared the 16 GB versions of both phablets. But before you jump to any conclusions I just have to say that the S-pen is one handy little piece of hardware that you don’t find on the Galaxy Mega 6.3. And in my opinion, it is well worth the extra 50 bucks.

But still, the Galaxy Mega 6.3 is a lot cheaper, and therefore, picks up this point.

Conclusion

There you have it, while the Samsung Galaxy Note II picked up one point the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 picked up two. But was it really worth it? I mean, I’m sure Samsung could have incorporated some of the features from its other smart phones into the Galaxy Mega 6.3. They could definitely have made it a little lighter. And if you take out the fact that the phablet has better hardware, there really is no reason why anyone would go for it. Then again, I’m sure Samsung were saving up all their new features for the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note III. And the Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 can, at best, be considered an interim phablet, just to keep people interested.
