Enabling and Customizing Battery Saving Mode:
- While viewing the home screen, press the "Menu" button
- Tap "Settings"
- Tap the "My device" tab
- Press the switch associated with "Power saving mode" to set it to "ON"
- To change the way saving mode works, tap "Power saving mode"
- Check or clear the check boxes associated with "CPU power saving", "Screen power saving" and / or "Turn off haptic feedback"
- Tap "Learn about Power saving mode" to see more tips about this mode
Switching form a Live Wallpaper:
Live wallpapers can greatly affect your phone's battery performance, especially if they're very graphically intense. To conserve battery life it's recommended that you use a "static" wallpaper.
- From any of the home screens, tap "Menu"
- Tap "Set wallpaper" > "Home screen"
- Choose the location of the wallpaper ("Gallery" or "Wallpaper")
- Browse for the desired image and tap "Set wallpaper". NOTE: if you're browsing the gallery, you will need to drag / crop / resize the image and tap "Done" to set it
Adjusting the Screen Brightness and Timeout Duration:
- Press the "Menu" button while viewing a home screen
- Tap "Settings"
- Go to the "My device" tab
- Tap "Display" > "Brightness"
- Clear the check box associated with "Automatic brightness" if necessary
- Drag the brightness slider to the left, and set it to a lower but still comfortable level
- Tap "OK"
- Tap "Screen timeout"
- Select a lower timeout duration, such as "15 seconds"
Disabling Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot and GPS:
Generally speaking, a smartphone's connectivity features have the greatest impact on the device's battery life. As such, it's always advised that you disable these features when not in use, especially GPS which can be a power hog. To do so:
- Press the "Menu" button while viewing a home screen
- Tap "Settings" and go to the "Connections" tab
- Tap "More networks" > "Tethering & Mobile Hotspot"
- Press the switch associated with "Mobile Hotspot" and set it to "OFF"
- Return to the home screen and drag the "Status" bar down
- Tap the switches associated with "Wi-Fi", "Bluetooth" and "GPS" in order to disable these features. NOTE: a grayed out icon means the feature is disabled
Changing how Application Sync Works:
Setting your device to sync less information or to sync less often can greatly help increasing battery life. To do this:
- While viewing any of the home screens, press the "Menu" button
- Tap "Settings"
- Tap the "Accounts" tab
- Select an account type under "My accounts", such as "Google"
- Adjust the available sync settings for the selected account type. To do this, you can usually tap a sync category to mark or clear its check box. You can also increase the interval time for syncing without disabling it altogether
- To adjust more sync settings, tap your "user name" or "email address" located at the top of the screen. Once again, you can mark / unmark check boxes for enabling or disabling syncing, or you can adjust the interval time
Disabling Background Data:
- While on the home screen, press the "Menu" button
- Tap "Settings" and go to the "Connections" tab
- Tap "Data usage"
- Press the "Menu" button and mark the check box next to "Restrict background data"
Minimizing the Use of Third Party Applications:
- Press the "Menu" key from any of the home screens
- Tap "Settings" > "More"
- Tap "Application manager" and swipe to the "Downloaded" screen
- Select an application and tap "Disable" or "Uninstall" (to remove it completely)
- Tap "OK"
Switching from 4G to 2G Connectivity:
- While on the home screen, press "Menu"
- Tap "Settings" > "Connections" > "More networks" > "Mobile networks"
- Tap "Network mode"
- From the list, select "GSM only" in order to restrict your device's connection to 2G
- To start using 4G again, tap "LTE / GSM / WCDMA (auto connect)" or "GSM / WCMA (auto connect)"
Updating to the Most Recent Software Version:
NOTE: By following these steps you can only gain battery life assuming that Samsung has released a new software update that fixes potential battery life issues with your device. Otherwise, this guide will have no effect on the battery performance.
- Press the "Menu" button while on a home screen
- Tap "Settings" > "More" > "About device" > "Software update"
- If an update is available, follow the on-screen prompts to download and install it
