Backing Up Applications:

  1. While viewing the home screen, tap "Apps"
  2. Tap "Settings"
  3. Under "User and Backup" tap "Backup and reset"
  4. Sign in with your Google account. To add an account, tap "Backup account" > "Add account" and follow the on-screen prompts
  5. If necessary, mark the check boxes next to "Backup my data" and "Backup account"

Contact Backup

Backing Up Contacts on a Samsung or Google Account:

  1. Tap the "Contacts" icon located on the home screen
  2. Tap the "Settings" icon
  3. Select "Merge accounts"
  4. Select either "Google" or "Samsung account"
  5. Tap "OK" and the contacts will be merged with your selected account

Backing Up Contacts on the SD Card:

  1. Make sure the SD card is installed on your phone
  2. Tap "Apps" while on the home screen
  3. Tap "Settings"
  4. Under "Applications", tap "Contacts"
  5. Tap "Contacts to display" > "All contacts"
  6. Tap "Import / Export" > "Export to SD Card"
  7. Record the backup file's name for future use and tap "OK" to confirm

Media File Backup

Backing Up Media Files Using the Device's Storage:

  1. Ensure that the SD card is installed on your phone
  2. Open the apps drawer
  3. Tap "My Files"
  4. Scroll to "Local Storage" and tap "Device storage"
  5. Tap the "Menu" icon
  6. From the drop-down menu, tap "Select"
  7. Navigate to the files / folders containing the media files. (NOTE: pictures captured with the "Camera" app are found in the "DCIM" folder", audio files are in "Notifications" etc.)
  8. Mark the check box associated with the desired file or folder
  9. Tap the "Menu" icon
  10. Select "Copy" > "SD card"
  11. Navigate to where you wish to copy the files
  12. Tap "Paste here"

Backing Up Media Files using a Windows Computer:

  1. Connect your Galaxy S5 Active to your PC using the USB cable
  2. Swipe the "Status" bar down
  3. Tap "Connected as a media device" and mark the "Media device (MTP)" check box
  4. From the AutoPlay window on the computer, click "Open device to view files"
  5. Open the "Card" or "Phone" drive and locate your media files stored on the smartphone
  6. Copy the files and paste them in the desired location on your computer's HDD

Backing Up Media Files using a Mac Computer:

NOTE: Skip the first 2 steps if you already have Samsung Kies installed on your Mac

  1. Open the Internet browser on your Mac and navigate to Kies
  2. Click "Download for Mac OS" and follow the on-screen prompts to install the software
  3. Use the USB cable to connect the Galaxy S5 Active to the computer
  4. Swipe the "Status" bar down and tap "Connected as a media device"
  5. Mark the "Media device" check box"
  6. On the Mac, launch Kies
  7. From Kies, go to the "Back up / Restore" tab
  8. Access the "Backup" tab
  9. Mark the check box next to "Music" and "Photo"
  10. If you want to back up all the files, mark the "Select all items" check box
  11. Click "Backup"
  12. Once the process is complete, safely disconnect your smartphone from the Mac
