WARNING! Master resetting the Galaxy J5 will result in the deletion of all personal data stored on the phone’s internal memory, including contacts, media files, ringtones, downloads etc. Additionally, all settings will be restored to factory values.

NOTE: Before the factory reset, you can visit this thread to learn how to back up data, and this thread for a guide on how to restore data on the Galaxy J5.

Factory Reset via Settings:

  1. Tap “Apps” on the home screen
  2. Go to “Settings”
  3. Swipe to “Personal” and tap “Backup and reset”
  4. Optionally, tap the sliders next to “Back up my data” and “Restore” to enable / disable these features
  5. Tap “Factory data reset” > “Reset device"
  6. Assuming your phone is protected by a lock screen, enter your PIN / password / pattern etc. to proceed
  7. Tap “Continue” > “Delete all”

Master Reset via Recovery:

NOTE: If you are unable to master reset the phone via settings as detailed above, you can try applying the factory reset from Recovery. To access the recovery menu you need to perform a combination of button key presses. To do so:

  1. Turn off the phone
  2. Press and hold “Volume Up” and “home” at the same time
  3. Press and hold “Power”
  4. At the “Samsung” logo, release the “Power” key but keep the other two buttons pressed
  5. At the Android logo, release all hardware buttons
  6. Wait for the Recovery menu to appear
  7. From the recovery menu, press “Volume Down” repeatedly to highlight “wipe data / factory reset”
  8. Press “Power” to select the highlighted option
  9. Highlight “yes – delete all user data” using “Volume down”
  10. Press “Power” to select the option
  11. At the “Reboot system now” prompt, press “Power” to restart your device

Check for Updates:

NOTE: After factory resetting the phone, you should check if newer software updates are available for download on your device. To do so:

  1. Tap “Apps” on the home screen
  2. Open “Settings”
  3. Swipe to “System” and tap “About device”
  4. Check the software version and if applicable, follow the on-screen prompts to download and apply the available update(s)
