WARNING! When master resetting your phone, you will lose all personal data stored on the phone including downloaded content, ringtones, contacts, media files etc. Furthermore all settings will be restored to factory values.

NOTE: You can visit this thread to learn how you can back up data on the Galaxy A5 before resetting it, and this thread for instructions on how to restore data.

Factory Reset via Settings:

  1. Open the apps drawer
  2. Go to “Settings”
  3. Scroll to “Personal” and tap “Backup and reset”
  4. Optionally, enable or disable “Back up my data” and “Restore”
  5. Tap “Factory data reset” > “Reset device”
  6. In case your phone is protected by a lock screen, enter the password / PIN to proceed
  7. Tap “Continue” > “Delete all”

Factory Reset via Recovery:

NOTE: In case you are unable to reset the phone using the method above, you can try resetting it from within Recovery mode.

  1. First, turn off the phone
  2. Press and hold “Volume Up”, “Home” and “Power” at the same time
  3. At the “Samsung” logo, release “Power”
  4. When the “Android” logo appears, release “Volume Up” and “Home” too
  5. After a moment you should gain access to the “Android system recovery” menu
  6. In this menu, press “Volume down” repeatedly to highlight “Wipe data / factory reset”
  7. Press “Power” to confirm the highlighted option
  8. Press “Volume down” to highlight “Yes – delete all user data”
  9. Press “Power” and wait for the device to reset
  10. When prompted to “Reboot system now”, press “Power”

Check for OS Updates:

NOTE: Once you complete the factory reset, it’s recommended that you check for new OS updates. To do this:

  1. Tap “Apps” on the home screen
  2. Open “Settings”
  3. Scroll to “System”
  4. Tap “About device” and check if a newer OS version is available. If yes, follow the on-screen steps to download and install it
