WARNING! When you factory reset your phone, all the personal data stored on the device’s internal memory will be deleted, including contacts, apps, media files, ringtones, downloaded content etc. In addition, all settings will be restored to factory values. However, data stored on the SIM and SD cards will not be affected.

Factory Reset via Settings:

  1. Open the apps drawer
  2. Launch “Settings”
  3. Under “Personal”, tap “Backup and reset”
  4. Optionally, you can enable or disable “Back up my data” and “Restore”
  5. Tap “Factory data reset”
  6. Tap “Reset device”
  7. If your phone is lock screen-protected, enter your PIN / password and tap “Continue”
  8. Tap “Delete all” to confirm

Factory Reset via Recovery (Hardware Buttons):

NOTE: If your phone freezes, crashes, or otherwise doesn’t allow you to reset it via Settings, you can try resetting the phone from the Recovery menu, which can be accessed by performing a combination of button presses.

  1. If necessary, turn off the phone
  2. Then, press and hold “Power”, “Home” and “Volume Up” at the same time
  3. When the “Samsung” logo appears, release “Power”
  4. At the “Android” logo, release “Home” and “Volume Up” too
  5. Wait for the Recovery menu to be displayed (this may take up to 60 seconds)
  6. Press “Volume down” repeatedly in the Recovery menu to navigate to and highlight “Wipe data / factory reset”
  7. Press “Power” to confirm the highlighted option
  8. Press “Volume down” to highlight “Yes – delete all user data” and press “Power” to select the option
  9. After the phone completes the factory reset “Reboot system now” should be highlighted
  10. Press “Power” one last time to confirm and restart your device

Check for OS Updates:

NOTE: After a fresh factory reset, it’s recommended to check if new software updates are available for download. To do this:

  1. Tap “Apps” on the home screen
  2. Access “Settings”
  3. Scroll down to, and tap “About device”
  4. Verify if a new software update is available and if so, follow the on-screen prompts to download and apply it
