WARNING! When you factory reset your device, all your personal data stored on the device’s internal memory will be deleted, including contacts, media files, downloaded content, apps etc. In addition, all the settings will be restored to factory values.

NOTE: Before you factory reset your phone, you can check this thread for a guide on how to back up data, and this thread for a guide on restoring data.

Factory Reset via Settings:

  1. Open “Settings”
  2. Go to “Personal”
  3. Tap “Backup and reset”
  4. Optionally, enable or disable “Restore” and “Back up my data”
  5. When ready, tap “Factory data reset” > “Reset device”
  6. In case the phone is protected by a lock screen, enter your password/PIN to proceed
  7. Tap “Delete all” > “Reset device”

Factory Reset via Android Recovery:

NOTE: If your phone crashes, freezes, or otherwise prevents you from resetting it via settings, alternatively you can reset the device from the Android Recovery menu. To do this:

  1. Turn the phone Off
  2. Press and hold “Power” “Volume Up” and “Home” at the same time
  3. At the “Samsung” logo, release “Power”
  4. Release “Volume Up” and “Home” at the Android screen
  5. Once in Recovery, press “Volume down” repeatedly to navigate the menu and highlight “Wipe data/factory reset”
  6. Press “Power” to select the option
  7. Press “Volume down” to highlight ‘Yes – delete all user data” and press “Power”

Check for OS Updates:

NOTE: After factory resetting the phone you should check if new software updates are available for download.

  1. Launch “Settings”
  2. Go to “About device”
  3. Check if new updates are available
  4. If applicable, follow the on-screen prompts to download and install the update (note that the update process will require at least one reboot)
