Re: Samsung u420: Did I just buy a very sexy peice of crap?

It is on the actual phone, no PC required for this menu.

    Starting from the home screen:
    go to the menu
    down to Settings
hit the '0' key and enter the lock code (000000)
then scroll down to Bluetooth (#8)
hit the '#' key and enter the password (8886573982)

    Hope that helps clarify!

Once I enter the 000000 code it only gives me 5 options.. There is not one for Bluetooth. Any other ideas?

mss542: That's quite strange, can't say I have any idea.

Back to my support request from Alltel, I finally got a somewhat definitive answer. Here's the summary in reply to gaining access to the currently unaccessible files in the /brew folder:

"...please take your phone to the local retail store. Often, this issue can be resolved by having the software in the phone 'flashed' or updated. Calling in to the call centers or emailing will not resolve this issue. The phone physically has to be taken to an Alltel retail store."
So there you have it. I guess I will have to try that sometime this weekend if I can find the time.

Re: Samsung u420: Did I just buy a very sexy peice of crap?

Ok, I'm new to the forums, & cell phone "advanced" usage, but I have discovered that I am not alone in my frustrations with Alltel and the U420! Thanks to all who post here for helping!!!
Yesterday I called Alltel & spoke with an AT rep. He told me that the bluetooth is only for using your phone as a modem, so I took mine back. Also, he did get online and find this... 20061115134548296_Samsung_PC_Studio_31_Installer.exe. It is on the Samsung site. He suggested getting the usb from the 807 phone and trying it with the program! He did confirm that photos, contacts and ringtones can be transferred via pc without "unlocking" the phone. I'm ignorant enough to think that I can get answers, so I'm going to find someone at Samsung to talk to!!! <---riiight!
Does anyone have any updates to any of the other attempts here?

Re: Samsung u420: Did I just buy a very sexy peice of crap?

Sorry, also, at the Alltel store, the sales rep denied any availability for data transfer on the U420. The advanced tech rep said that this was the weakest attempt at getting me to upgrade to a newer Nokia! Point- going to the store and hoping to have the phone flashed is out of the question now!
BTW, the software I previously mentioned, is here>>

I previously downloaded the software you linked to, it dosen't work with BlueTooth as you may have guessed but it may work with the Cable, if someone could give it a try as i still have yet to order my cable.

Re: Samsung u420: Did I just buy a very sexy peice of crap?

I just got back from the Alltel store and am as disappointed as you. They denied all of the things that tech support told me, and I am now back where I started.

As for Samsung PC Studio 31, which you linked to, I have tried it with no success. It will not even recognize my phone, which BitPim does just fine. I have not heard of anyone who has gotten it to work with the U420, so I am very curious as to how your Alltel rep got it working.

I'm pretty sick of being sent in circles and being told lies by Alltel and Samsung, so I am really hoping someone can make a breakthrough on this... But, at this point, it is looking more and more like the only way around this is with a firmware hack.

Firmware hack? I have an idea of what this is, but I would probably need step-by-step instructions! I wonder if this can be sweet-talked out of a Samsung rep!?

Re: Samsung u420: Did I just buy a very sexy peice of crap?

This is the reply I got from Samsung:
    Dear Brian,

    Software Inquiry?

Thank you for you email concerning the software needed for your model phone. This would be something that you should call in for assistance to troubleshoot. Most issues can be resolved with just a couple of troubleshooting steps. However, it could be quite lengthy to sort out via email. The quickest way to a resolution would be to contact technical support. Please contact our Samsung Customer Support, by phone toll free at 1-888-987-4357.

Your continued interest in Samsung products is appreciated.

    Sincerely,
    Technical Support

Re: Samsung u420: Did I just buy a very sexy peice of crap?

I got another reply from Alltel via email. This one regarding the fact that my local Alltel store told me there was nothing they could do regarding this issue. Here's an excerpt:

The retail stores with service centers can upgrade software. However, not ALL Alltel stores will have a service center. Please call 1-800-255-8359 as the email team cannot correct your phone issue!
I have not called the number, but does anyone know anything about this? My luck, the closest service center will be hundreds of miles away...

you can chose Handset Repair Services from the list, couldn't find any in my area but you may have better luck.

Locate an Alltel store nearest you.
