    I really like the K800i (plus it was in Casino Royale) and I live in Minnesota in the United States. I am thinking about buying an unlocked one, but I have a couple of questions.

    1. I have cingular (currently a RAZR, first generation) and was wondering if an unlocked K800i would even be compatible?

    2. How should I buy an unlocked phone?

    Thanks in advance for helping out a NoOb.

    1. You can still use the K800i, you just have to find out if you can use it in your area. The K800i runs on 900/1800/1900Mhz, while Cingular uses 850/1900Mhz. You'd have to find out if 850Mhz predominantly runs in your area, or if you can just get by with 1900Mhz. Look up your coverage and see what's in use. The K800 is a nice phone, but if 850Mhz is being used (which I am thinking is likely) around MIN, then it just becomes an over glorified paper weight. You'd be repaeating the catch phrase of the old Verizon commercials "can you hear me now?" over and over again. I had the same issue when I had my K750i and P910i...they became a waste of money because I couldn't use them for the lack of 850Mhz. Your best bet is to stick with the K790a, which is geared primarily for the North Americas. I'm not too sure if and when SE will be coming out with a silver K790a. Probably another option is to buy a K790a and swap the housing into a silver one.

    2. Essentially, there is nothing wrong with buying unlocked phones. The only thing that you would have to do is get the settings for MMS and internet. However, you can get them on the SE website...very simple to use. Just one thing to remember, people who prefer to buy phones that are from the carrier usually have an easier time when having to replace it if it is defective. Having the warranty from the carrier makes it really simple for customers because they can just fall back on that, and they usually get their replacements in a few days (if not the next day). Unlocked phones, you'd have to deal with the manufacturer, which more than likely will take some time. So, branded and unlocked phones both have their pro's & con's. It just depends on what is more convenient for you.

    Thanks for your help. I found out that GSM 1900 might actually be better because I go to school in NY and GSM 1900 is the only frequency that works with cingular in that or area. One final question. I read on Ebay something about *factory unlocking* or OEM? Can anyone talk about that? Thanks.

    Yeah, places like New York and Seattle, you can get by with 1900Mhz. Unlocking is to just take out the restrictions from a phone locked to a certain carrier. Like say for example the K790a that is carried by Rogers of Canada. Since Rogers currently carries this phone, it is locked to their network. To use it on another GSM network, you'd have to unlock it, or take it a step further and flash the phone's firmware to reset everything, as if it came directly from the manufacturer (with the updated firmware, of course).

    OEM = Original Equipment Manufacturer

    Okay, I'm pretty sure I'm going to get this phone. Just a few final questions. How do you recommend I buy it? Is Ebay an okay place to buy an unlocked phone? Can I just take the SIM card from my RAZR and put it in the K800i? Also, how difficult is it to download and upload the stuff needed to make it work? Thanks.

    eBay is a good place to buy merchandise, you'll just want to do some research on the sellers that you potentially would do business with. Also, just communicate with the seller and keep asking questions. One noted seller is x1387, who has a good rating.

    Yes, you can just take your SIM card and switch it to the K800i. For MMS and internet settings, just go to the Sony Ericsson website, follow the bread crumbs (support -> product support), and you can go from there.
