Sony Ericsson T290i is not charging despite meter showing it does

I need this old cellphone as alternative while my smartphone will undergo repairs in service center.

I put this phone on charger and everyday saw as charge level slowly increased until I had enough and disconnected charger. That's when I saw battery charge level at 3%

Anyone knows what it does not charge?

By the way, same was with old battery and same is with new battery I purchased recently.
