Is there a way to port my number from sprint to another provider without cancelling the sprint contract?
Background: My sprint contract has two more months on it, but I can't wait to get out of sprint, coverage in my new neighborhood is close to zero. I'd rather pay two months of service than the ~$200 cancellation fee.
Truthfully, I'd rather pay nothing and just get sprint to cancel for craptastic coverage, but based on the horror stories here and elsewhere about the difficulty of cancellation, I want a back up plan because I don't have forever to fight it out with sprint.

Re: Port number without cancelling contract?
Have you considered looking into ways that your contract has been broken by Sprint, leading to no ETFs?
Ex: Sprint: Oct31 Deadline For Free Sprint Contract Killing - Consumerist
This is dated, but lately a lot of people have conveniently used increases in txt msgs to opt out of their contracts. I suggest looking into your situation to see if you can apply this theory.

Yes I have, I meant to diffuse alternate suggestions by pointing out that I don't have time to fight things out with sprint on technicalities.
I am specifically looking for a way to port my number without automatic cancellation of my sprint contract.

Not possible. Porting will cancel that phone number immediately.

Here, you can get out with this:
Cellphones: Cancel Sprint Without Early Termination Fee Over Roaming Rate Change - Consumerist
Since the rates have changed, the contract is basically voided, allowing you to move your number for free.

Re: Port number without cancelling contract?
as to n1ckel5's solution, you have to talk to cancellations first, they will then close your account and you can no longer port out your number!!
