T-Mobile and iphone

I have T-Mobile with a data plan and I will have my contract for another year. I want a iPhone and see that I can purchase a 3gs that is said to work with T-Mobile, but my question is - is it really that easy?

Do I just purchase an unlocked phone from Apple and use it with T-Mobile?

Don't do it, here's why:

it will "work" on T-Mobile at painfully crippled, 2G EDGE speeds if you buy it at a super-high unlocked price
